Greatest wrestlers by areas of technique.

Recommended Posts

Not sure if something quite like this has been done on here before, and if it has, I apologize, but maybe with the down time we've got right now it would be a good time to brainstorm on something like this.  I'm interested to see what others think.  This can go back in time as far as you would like.  We're talking college level, not international.  I have my thoughts on these questions, but I'm saving them for later, so here goes:

Top 5 greatest takedown wrestlers of all-time:

Top 5 greatest mat wrestlers of all-time:

Top 5 greatest leg wrestlers of all-time:

Top 5 wrestlers with the most grit/mental toughness/heart:

And here's one that's pretty specific, but one I like to throw out there.....

Top 5 guys with a fireman's carry:

Good info & good to hear from someone who has actually seen many of the best, not just the last 5 years.

Ooops -- gotta add Doug Blubaugh to toughness, for sure! Ask anyone from his era -- like Wayne Baughman and Gray Simons and they will tell you!

And BadgerMon has added some great names. AKHunter --  many years ago I was in a national sombo tournament with Wade (different weights) and he breezed into the finals where he faced a legendary black belt in judo. After a wild flurry, the black belt had Wade locked up tight in a behind-the-back arm lock and some were yelling for Wade to tap out. Instead, Wade initiated another wild flurry and suddenly he had the judo expert in the same hold...and made him tap out. It was one of the greatest displays of mental toughness and mat sense I have ever seen. And watching Mark Ironside for 4 years, I agree with Schute all the way.

I’d think the following deserve consideration by virtue of being world-champ caliber while in college: Uetake, Kemp, Smith, Neal, Burroughs, Snyder.

Also, Askren has to be one of the best mat wrestlers.

 Best counter wrestler:  Randy Lewis

Best stall rider:  Tony Nelson

I like best counter wrestler as a category, and Randy Lewis is a good answer,  but Randy was pretty much pre-low single leg, which adds a whole new dimension to counter wrestling, and Randy's stance was straight up and down....
