This isn’t even getting into the realm of people who lie about their credentials and then try to scam people from that.

Excellent story. I don't know if you know but he was homeless and living under overpasses in the highways in Houston for years. There was a little documentary or special on him on ESPN one time. Very sad.

There are a lot of pre-internet  "Olympic alternates " out there.  Especially for 1980 for some reason.

The guy who argues about everything and  tries to tell you don't know anything about wrestling despite wrestling for 13 years, coaching for 20 years, traveling around the country and most of all being. a poster on this board. Then you find out they never even wrestled. Next, the guy who argues with you that you don't have to have wrestled to understand everything about it.

those who whine about people who bring up certain topics, but bring up those same topics constantly to elicit a response (btw, that might be me this time)

My least favorite fans are the ones who sit behind me, then emit an ear-piercing whistle while rooting for their kid.  The next worst is the teenie bop girl with a high-pitched voice who screams at the top of her lungs for her boyfriend or brother.

I've taken to wearing ear plugs to the meets.

"and I'm right above the bench ringing that cowbell... security came down and I guess it is against the rules... I kept at it... didn't care... police came and told me to give up the cow bell or leave... I kept ringing it... and was escorted out with it..."

Then talking about the PSU dual.  "...a fan gave me a bigger, louder cowbell ...it is going to be pretty hot in there but... I might be wearing this big fur hat... and my blue ray bans..."

The 1980 Olympian is a classic. Run into one or two of those every year. At a tournament a few years ago we even had one as a “special guest.” He was announced, waved to the crowd, and posed for pictures. Looked him up and he was nowhere to be found on the national circuit 1978-1982.

That's pretty annoying. I graduated in 1983 and there is NOTHING on my HS career online. Sure, there are lists of state champions..but I NEVER WON STATE. The only things I have to prove that I wrestled are 1) my medals/trophies/newspaper clippings and 2) a "1982 Oklahoma HS Wrestling Results" book (which, shockingly, I still have and in great condition), 3) the brutal memories of asswhippings retained by those unfortunate enough to step on the mat with me. Anyway that Oklahoma HS wrestling book from '83 not only includes my results for the year (although they got my first name wrong), but also includes results for all other Oklahoma HS wrestlers that year, including a Sr from Del City named "John Smith".  I hadn't seen that book in over 30 years, and the last time I visited my 90 year old folks in Oklahoma they presented it to me, saying "do you remember this"? Plus the kicker: I'm on the cover :D

Tobus, Although this happened in middle school for my kid rather than high school, I will still never forget it. I believe it was the first tournament when Connor was in the seventh grade. He had done well in this first year in middle school but wasn't a state champ or anything. A  new kid on his team had moved over from a different club. While standing there talking his mom and dad said yes Jay was undefeated last year. As my eyes bugged out of my head, Connor said you were state champion? To which his parents replied oh no we didn't even go to the postseason. They happened to be about the same weight class in a couple weeks later met and my kid came off the mat and he goes there must have been some pretty crappy state champions last year, LOL. I just don't get people just flat-out lying right to somebody's face when it can easily be checked.
