Recommended Posts

Just something I put together during my forced internment in my own home the last month or so.  Corrections are welcome on this.

ARIZONA STATE

Arizona State has won three of the last four PAC 12 wrestling tournaments and will almost certainly be, barring a slew of injuries or unseen events, the favorite to win the PAC 12 tournament again in 2021.  Primarily because the Sun Devils return four of their five 2020 PAC 12 weight class champions.  The only 2020 PAC 12 champion from Arizona State who won't be returning is Tanner Hall at 285 lbs.

The four 2020 PAC 12 wrestling champs who will be returning for the Sun Devils are:

125 lbs - Brandon Courtney - 2021 RS Junior (25-5)

157 lbs - Jacori Teemer - 2021 RS Sophomore (17-5)

174 lbs - Anthony Valencia - 2021 RS Senior (22-6)

197 lbs - Kordell Norfleet - 2021 Senior OR RS Junior (14-3)

The Sun Devils also will have two wrestlers who placed 3rd at the 2020 PAC 12 tournament returning in Cory Crooks who placed 3rd at 141 lbs and Cade Belshay who placed 3rd at 184 lbs.  Belshay is projected to return at 184 lbs in 2021  (he dropped down late last season from 197 lbs after Zahid Valencia was suspended).  Crooks will be a RS Senior and is projected to move up to 149 lbs in 2021.  Belshay will be a RS Junior for the 2021 season.

=============================

The probable lineup for Arizona State's wrestling team for the 2021 season is as follows.  Returning Starters are listed in Bold print.  Of couse this is all subject to change as some wrestlers may move up (or down) from their present weight class and there may be transfers involved which would affect this probable lineup in the next few months.
All rankings are from WrestleStat

is it confirmed that AV is dropping back down to 165?

I have not seen it confirmed anywhere. I believe he prefers that weight. On top of that, Munoz is a workout rat and I think he could turn into a huge 174 and eventually a 184.

You did a nice job with this. Raimo stayed at 125 all of 2019-20 so I don’t see him moving up. I don’t think either bear McGee up there. I also think Raimo beats Courtney. Hoping a transfer comes in at 149. Vasquez probably could win the spot but hopefully gets a RS season. Chlebove has a lot of room to add bulk and hopefully he has. He was a pretty small 141 this past season.

=============================

Awesome preview! Really, really hope they find a reputable transfer in order to redshirt Vasquez and start someone other than Crooks, Demison, Ulrey, or Belton at 149. The latter I could see being a competent starter at 133/141, but 149 is quite a reach imo. Aside from that dilemma, that looks to be a young, salty lineup. Only other areas I defer are Valencia at 65, and KD at 84. I think they both are much better suited to stay at their 2020 weight classes for a number of reasons.

Thanks.  I put Raimo at both 125 lbs and 133 lbs because Zeke Jones said Raimo would be moving up to 133.

Also, I can confirm Norfleet will be a RS JR in 2021. ASU is expecting him to get a medical year back.

Thanks - I appreciate you mentioning this.  I've been wondering what his class year will be for quite a while.

A few thoughts:

A) I am not certain that AV returns to ASU.  His brother graduated and his favorite coach left.  I wouldn't be surprised to see him go.   Oregon State wouldn't surprise me, neither would any T10-15 squad that needs a 165/174lber for a season and has a RTC that has legit 74 kegger folks competing.

B) I am all aboard AV for Freestyle and forgetting about Folk.  That doesn't mean I don't want to see him in Folk.  That means let him go 174 in Folk.  Last freestyle season he showed that he still has moxy to compete at 74 keggers, and while he may not beat any Tier 1 gents, he has some wonderfully entertaining matches left in him.  I think if you drains himself to 165 for an entire season we don't see the best version of him.

C) I want Teemer at 165.  I know he started his redshirt season at 149, but Teemer is a freestyle guy.  I chocked his gas tank issues this last season to injuries, however, if freestyle is long-term for him, then let him go the freestyle weight and grow into it.  It was a big reason I did not want Carr at 157 last year, either.  He NEEDS to grow if he wants to be a factor at 74 keggers.  That or shrink(in that case have him go 149 if that is the plan).

D) Very excited for Schultz.  I know he is a greco guy, but I am hoping he translates it well like Coon did.  I don't see him pulling AA his frosh season, though.  IMHO.

Can I also jump ahead a year or two also. If Figs recommits and comes to ASU, there is a super legit expectation that the trophy is within reach for the team.

2023

125. Figs

133. Raimo

141. Chlebove

149. Vasquez

157. Cael

165. Teemer

285. Schultz

Multiple positions that have a legit chance to win aN individual national title.

They "should' have a very formidable lineup in a couple years.

Side note: "They should have a very formidable lineup in a couple years" - 2017

They beat Penn State in a dual, were ranked in the top 5 before their best wrestler got suspended, and had six top 9 seeds at the NCAA tournament. Sounds pretty darn formidable to me.

In and of itself, yes it was a formidable lineup. In relation to the hype and national championship talk 3-4 years ago, not so much.

Even with Zahid they would have had to have a very good tournament to trophy.

With the first class, they went all in on 5 guys. Never stocked the cupboard with anything significant after that. Bennick left and Maruca never developed. Got a year of Tsirtsis and Milhof as a replacement. The recruiting now seems to be following up a great class with solid additions and a longer deeper lineup.

I agree they will have less holes in the lineup and some depth at some weights.

Micheal McGee now gives them that depth at the two lowest weights. The highly rated recruiting class has followed up with Vasquez and a very good transfer. Then hopefully to be followed with Valencia and Figueroa. Dont need to hit a home run every recruiting cycle, but a hammer and the tinniest bit of depth each year would be nice.

Because you had to RSVP in a form by the time of the event. The event is over so the form used to sign up With (this link) no longer exists. After you RSVP they send you an invite by email.  That’s how the ones I have been in on work. Also it did address season ticket holders. Not sure if that was who it was limited too or not.  Hopefully the video will be on YouTube. In the meantime here is a different recent zoom interview with Jones
