Preliminary Stanford preview for 2021

Recommended Posts

STANFORD

The Stanford wrestling team has finished either 1st or 2nd at the annual PAC 12 wrestling tournament three of the last four seasons.  The Cardinal finished 2nd in 2020, 1st in 2019, 4th in 2018 and 2nd in 2017.

In 2020 Stanford had two PAC 12 wrestling champions and both of them were underclassmen.  Namely Real Woods at 141 lbs and Shane Griffith at 165 lbs.  In addition to their two returning PAC 12 champions Stanford also has five returning starters who placed 2nd at the 2020 PAC 12 tournament.  Specifically the following:

125 lbs - Jackson DiSario (2021 True Sophomore) - 2020 PAC 12 runner-up at 125 lbs

149 lbs - Requir van der Merwe (2021 RS Senior) - 2020 PAC 12 runner-up at 149 lbs

157 lbs - Tyler Eischens (2021 RS Sophomore) - 2020 PAC 12 runner-up at 157 lbs

174 lbs - Jared Hill (2021 RS Senior) - 2020 PAC 12 runner-up at 174 lbs

197 lbs - Nathan Traxler (2021 RS Senior) - 2020 PAC 12 runner-up at 197 lbs

These seven returning Stanford wrestlers who finished last season either 1st or 2nd at the 2020 PAC 12 tournament make the Cardinal the most probable PAC 12 team to place 2nd at the 2021 PAC 12 wrestling tournament and possibly challenge Arizona State for the team title.

=============================

The probable lineup for Stanford's wrestling team for the 2021 season is as follows: (Returning Starters are listed in Bold print.  Of course this is all subject to change as some wrestlers may move up (or down) from their present weight class and there may be transfers involved which would affect this probable lineup in the next few months.  I have listed each weight class (below) by each wrestler's WrestleStat ranking.

All rankings are from WrestleStat - CORRECTIONS ARE WELCOME

Thanks for catching those typo errors.

The pac 12 or some wrestling site should be paying you for all the content and information you put out. One of your previews details more about the pac 12 then you’ll see from Flo or intermat for an entire season, always much appreciated bronco

Thanks - I'm just trying to kill time during the B.S. that is the "stay home" order here in my home State (Idaho).

I'm doing these PAC 12 team previews in the order of how each school placed at the 2020 PAC 12 tournament.  Next up is Cal State Bakersfield and then Oregon State.  Not sure I'm going to do Cal Poly or Little Rock.

I hear ya, it seems NJ stay home order isn’t going to end anytime soon. Question do you think Nick Addison will be a starter again at some point for Stanford? I was pretty surprised when he went D1, he was “only” a 2x state qualifier and 2x state 4th, not usually the type of results of most NJ guys that go to big schools

The Magic 8 Ball says "Outlook not so good".  If he is back next season at Stanford I would have to think they would redshirt him.  It was a bit unfair of them to have him start as a True Freshman last season IMO.  He would have been better off redshirting.  Seems the coaching staff didn't figure out that they could have had Hill or Karmon at 184 lbs rather than Addison.  They apparently didn't figure that out until the PAC 12 tournament.

As to the Stay Home order here in Idaho people are opposing it with defiance here.  A local bar in Nampa is defying it by opening back up this weekend.  A local woman was deliberately arrested (her choice) by trying to be in a local park that was closed by the local government.   A large group of people gathered outside the Capitol Building in Boise to protest this (illegal) action by the Governor last week, etc.   I - personally - think the whole thing is ridiculously absurd and the actions by the government (all over the U.S.) have done FAR more harm than any good that will ever come from their foolishly short-sighted actions.   All government officials should follow the examples of Sweden and the State of Florida.

Yea I thought it was strange he started right away, hopefully after a redshirt in the long run it’ll benefit him....Yea nj is pretty ridiculous, it’s now against the law to go into a store of any kind without a mask yet I can walk into the tiny corner store and 7 people are in line buying lottery tickets and that’s ok but it’s a crime for me to go hiking or go for a drive by myself at 10 pm it’s just crazy

At 133 I wouldn't be shocked if they plugged in a true freshman, like 3x CA placer Miranda. Really wish they held on to Ragusin.

I think Van der merwe might be hanging them up, but either way I think Abas gets the spot if he wants to stay at 149

At 184 I fully expect Harlan to take the spot. Didn't compete last year because he was banged up.

At 285 I think H. Maley takes back the spot after being an NCAA Qualifier in '19

This will be a fun lineup for the next few seasons. It'll never be complete enough to be a true trophy contender, but 3-4 AAs won't be out of reach

Well, I guess I can take solace in the fact that Idaho has not reached the New Jersey level of absurdity YET.    I've been going to my local grocery stores every week or so and less than half of the people in the store (on my last trip) were NOT wearing a mask of any kind (I was as I'm a Senior).  Included in the non-mark wearers was a very rotund woman who was hacking and coughing repeatedly - and she just so happened to be just ahead of me at the check out counter.  I turned to the guy behind me (who like me was wearing a mask) and told him "I'm not getting ANYWHERE near that woman - I'm waiting till she leaves the store to go to the check stand".   He replied with "I don't blame you".

they literally have people blocking the entrances of the stores to check if your wearing a mask, pure madness. Craziest part I think is I had back surgery a few months ago and all physical therapy was stopped when I the governor locked down the state because apparently its “ elective”, and yet I could get a prescription for medical weed though and go to the dispensary because that’s an “essential “ service, hell I could go get an abortion right now but recovering from major surgery That’ll have to wait a few months, like I said pure madness

I read today that if you are a barber or hair dresser and you do someone’s hair at your own house and someone reports it’s your looking at 1000 dollar fine and yet NJ literally releasing criminals from the jails at the same time as threatening normal people, I wish I lived somewhere more rural throughout all this , believe me if Idaho is getting to you, you would absolutely lose it out here

Yeah man NJ sucks. Don't worry Murphy is making sure our liquor stores, weed shops, fast food restaurants are crushing it while closing down parks, gyms, beaches, trails and anything else we can do to stay sane and healthy lol. My friend got into a wicked mountain bike accident and busted up his shoulder and had surgery right before all this is started and is the same boat as you.

It's real easy for someone like me to to criticize and complain though. I'm sure none of these  decisions are easy, its just kind of ironic and funny.  Have friends that are health care working in hospitals and as bad as it is to be cooped up, its nothing compared to the people in the hospitals right now.  The decisions are only going to get more difficult in the coming months. I'm in Monmouth county by the way actually only a couple towns away from Addison's home town. Was surprised to see him in the lineup too which is all I really wanted to say before going on a random rant lol.
