Best HS State Tournament Champs ever?

Recommended Posts

These 2006 NJ State Champs are just awesome! 4 Future NCAA Champs and 2 Olympic Team members. What States can beat that? I'm sure Pennsylvania must have some that are right there. I don't think any State can match the 4 in the middle. Can you name these guys?

Are we naming the 4 in the middle? All of them? Or naming states that top this? (I'm sure PA has some good years).

OP has too many questions. :(

But I'll go with Zach Rey in Hopatcong shirt, Noah Wylie in Cranford shirt and maybe Grey the younger in front row.

Yep, I think that class beats the NJ one you listed.  Both incredible though.  Jamill Kelly doesn’t fit original criteria though.  Who’s got PA best???

AA 2013 PA had Cruz (1X), Nolf (3X), Retherford (3X) plus Phillippi who still has an outside shot.

AAA that year also had 2X champ Joseph, Pletcher (#1 this year), Lizak (runner up), Kemerer (one more year), Marstellar plus Moisey also in AA.  Not too bad overall.  If Retherford or Nolf can get some world / Olympic hardware this could be a banner class.

2003 was probably the best depth year for Michigan High School wrestlers with NCAA DI results.

Paul Donahoe (jr.) Davison I don't remember if he missed due to injury or missing weight, but he wrestled for Davison at Team States the week before.  He was a undefeated state champ the year before and the year after.  Took 1st, 2nd and 3rd in NCAA's.

Brent Metcalf(so.)Davison 1st at 140(DI)  Took 1st,2nd, 1st in NCAA's

Jon Reader(fr.) Davison 3rd at 112(DI) Took 7th,4th,1st in NCAA's.

Josh Churella(sr.) Novi 1st at 135(DI)  Took 8th, 2nd, 4th in NCAA's.

Ryan(Bubba) Gritter(sr) Grandville 1st at 275(DI) Took 5th, 7th in NCAA's.

Roger Kish (sr.) Lapeer West 1st at 189(DII)  Took 2nd, 3rd in NCAA's.

Brandon Sinnott (sr.) Allen Park 1st at 160(DII) Took 7th, 5th in NCAA's.

Wynn Michalak(sr.) Caro 1st at 189(DIII)  Took 6th,8th,2nd in NCAA's.

Anthony Biondo was also a freshman state champ that year who made R12 at UofM.

To be fair, 2004 had 4 NCAA Champs:  Donahoe, Reader, Metcalf and Simaz.

Donahoe, Reader and Metcalf all from Davison...coach Roy Hall...other good ones on that team as well.

Always said California is a sleeping giant. If I was a billionaire and funded a program at let's say USC it would be a instant top 25 program.

I'm trying to think if NY has ever had more than 2 champions in the same year?

Pretty simple... The Banachs are from Port Jervis NY. Using that as a starting point revealed:

1983: Both Banachs and Clar Anderson

The link is dated, but here’s my source:

Destefanis and Edmond were the same era as Banachs/Anderson. Might they have all won HS the same year?
