Spencer Lee wins Sullivan Award

Recommended Posts

Shares is with Oregon women's basketball star Sabrina Ionescu.

It's great that a wrestler won. But looking at the past winners, it's a funny award.

It's sometimes shared, but rarely

Sometimes it goes to the best or one of the best athletes in a given sport. Sometimes it goes to good athlete who is also good at math (John Urschel) . Sometimes it goes to a partially disables athlete.  Sometimes it goes to a Heisman winner. Sometimes it goes to football player who is also a military academy captain. This year it went to the two most decorated athletes in their sports.

Among wrestlers, Lee is the first without an Olympic gold medal (others are John Smith, Rulon Gardner, Bruce Baumgartner and  Kyle Snyder). Here is the list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_E._Sullivan_Award

.

Sabrina Ionescu just wrapped an unprecedented, historic career. I don't think she should have had to share this award with someone who wrestled half a season. It's great for wrestlers to get recognized, but this is a miss.

Wrestled more than half the season.  Also wonder how much US Open was factored in.  It is not a "college" award, it is an "amateur award."

It's not a career award.

Also, you could say Sabrina also played half a season since her NCAA tournament was also cancelled.

If I were to question the choice it would be because neither enjoyed international success, such as a world championship.  Why not Dake or Cox?

Good point.  Are they counting that as 2019?

Not sure how the award is timed. It looks like most of the gold medalists who won the award won it in the year of the Olympics. But if the award is always given in April, that's before the Olympics. Others seem to win for prior-calendar year achievements. Snyder won it in 2017, the year he beat Sadulaev in the world championship.

If that is April 2017, wasn't it after the Olympics and before Saduleev match?

Exactly.  The award is not based on the first three months of 2020, but much more so on 2019,  a year in which he won not only the NCAA national championship but also dominated the senior national championship.

Yes, but the write-up of why he won says, "Kyle Snyder became a 2017 World Champion by winning what was dubbed as the “Match of the Century.” His win gave USA Wrestling the World Team title – its first in 22 years. Snyder won the U.S. Senior Open and U.S. World Team Trials in 2017."

It's an award for the current year that's given out every year for that purpose.  This year was the 90th year of the award being given.  The selection process has three criteria: Fan Vote, Media Vote, Committee Vote, so it seems to be a good process.  Awesome for wrestling to have one of our athletes win the award!

When you say "current year" do you mean Calendar 2019 or April 2019 to April 2020?
