Does Bo Nickal have bones made out of lead?

Look at the size of Pat Downey compared to him. Yes, I realize this is from a couple years ago, but Bo still looks the same.

While I would pick Hall over Downey, I'm not going to say he is entirely out of it.

I believe he'is in the same exact position he was last year.  He can hang with anyone not named David Taylor, although right now I would favor Valencia, Ringer, Hall, Martin, and Nickal over him.  I would have favored any of those five last year(at the time) as well in a best of 3-Final X scenario.  The only person who proved themselves at 86 keggers last year was Downey though.

Also last year Downey proved that he is well capable of rising to the occasion, buy showing up and beating out everyone put in front of him as well as outplacing everyone he didn't face.  He is easily one of the most improved 86 kegger guys we have from this last cycle.  Being a big powerful 86 that loves to throw, and that will put him in any match he isn't outclassed in.

So right now I have:

Tier 1: Taylor

Tie 2: Valencia, Ringer, Nickal

Tier 3: Hall, Martin, Downey

Tier 4: Brooks(both of them), Max Dean, Pfarr, Heflin, Jackson, Dudley

Tier 5: A slew of folks.

The way I view tiers, is that folks can make it competitive, even beating folks, a tier above them(under the right circumstances).  I don't see any of Tier 2 beating Taylor.  Perhaps Taylor needs to be Tier 0.  Healthy Taylor isn't losing. Period.

This is a thoughtful post and a very well constructed ladder.  My only disagreement is with the period.

I think that if the weight works for Nickal, he could have an outside shot at beating Taylor. I'm not a Nickal fan,, but he is uber talented, knows no limits, has a knack for rising to the occasion, and knows Taylor well.  Plus I think the one year delay is very fortuitous for him as he can use it to his advantage as a wrestler who has consistently demonstrated a great capacity for growth.

Hall has two problems:  1. His size, and 2. his offense appears to have stagnated.  He was a Freestyle savant coming in, but nothing we've seen shows real improvement in those areas.  The interesting thing about Hall-Downey is that we've seen some of the match up problems that Downey presents earlier in Hall's career.  Didn't he lose more than once to Peter Nagy, a Greco specialist?  Those matches were a long time ago, obviously, but if we all agree there's been stagnation in Hall's game, then it stands to reason that Downey will cause problems for him.

When did Nickal move to 86?

I think people are selling PDIII short.  He should be in Tier 2.

The difference in Tier 2 and Tier 3 is that I could see Tier 4 beating Tier 3 guys.  I don't see Tier 4 beating Tier 2 guys.  That is why Downey is Tier 3.

He hasn't....but the speculation is if he will move down or stay.

I agree - I think DT is all alone at the top -  If you put tier 2 and 3 together in a bracket,  you could have a different outcome of placers every time.

Agreed here.  I could see them all going 3-2/2-3 in a 6 man round robin.  As I said above, I just don't see any of Tier 2 losing to any of the Tier 4 guys.

Hall/Ringer would be fun to watch if Ringer can ever make 79 again

It would be a great barometer for how Hall would do against Dake. At least I’m assuming Dake goes back up to 79 after this Olympic cycle, regardless of what happens down at 74.

Downey is perpetually underrated because of his personal antics. Not a fan myself, but he can wrestle. He's definitely one of the biggest, strongest 86 kg guys in America, so if Hall is going to have problems there, he would have problems with Downey.

I think it's an interesting match up because Downey doesn't really attack the legs at all, which takes Hall's counter wrestling out of the picture. If Hall can hold his ground, I think he finds his way to a takedown and a close win, but that's not a given. Downey has marched some really good guys around the mat.

Good take. I don’t think Downey is an elite wrestler, but he’s a lot better than many will admit. I am often put off by his antics, but it’s been kind of funny how he’d been trolling DT.

Vs. Hall, I think it’ll come down to who gets put on the clock and who wins out on the scrambles. I can see PD controlling center mat, forcing Hall to attack. Hall is a slick scrambler, but I’m not sure he converts a leg shot into a TD with Downey on top, without exposing himself or getting forced OOB.

and anyone that thinks downey would not dig unders and push hall all over the mat at will is kissing themselves... it is not like hall is going to shoot... downey would totally control that match...

He would thrash that brilliant young man.

Downey had just wrestled THREE AAs, Dean...19 minutes earlier. Nickal was fresh as a daisy and hadn't wrestled ANYONE.  Stick those stones where the sun doesn't shine.

Is this a joke or not.

Actually, he is not enrolled in the university, but he is lecturing at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.

Stop lying. This is easily DEBUNKED. Nickal wrestled Richard Perry.

This has been hashed over.  Semis were wrestled Friday and wrestlebacks on Saturday, so PD3 had a couple of matches  that morning and Nickal didn't.  OTH - Nickal made semis and PD3 didn't, so it was fair.

He's been a top student at every school he's attended.  On track for med school - now considering between Hopkins, Harvard or Stanford.

But it wasn't fair that PD3 had Taylor in the quarters and Bo was on the other side of the bracket!  Waahhhh!

I might acknowledge the "he had to wrestle wrestling matches at the wrestling tournament" complaint if he had lost 9-8.....but he didn't he got completely steamrolled.

My bad...regardless, Downey had just had a barn burner with Dean 19 minutes earlier and Nickal hadn't wrestled in quite awhile...he was MUCH more fresh.

the only thing at makes him relevant is his personal antics.

Exactly, Junior World Silver, undefeated JUCO National Champ, D1 AA, WTT champion, WT member, U.S. Open Champ, Schultz Champ, bronze at Pan Ams and Pellicone, and a #9 ranking in the world don't mean anything.  I definitely think your mother dropped you on your head when you were a baby.

Take those results, compare them to say...James Green, now compare the amount of coverage.....whats the difference?

I don’t know that Taylor beats Nickal. I know nickal lost to cox but he was a lot lighter and cox had to cut to make weight as well. Does anyone have any inside knowledge of who wins when they practice together?

I'm bad, I almost forgot to mention these TEN notable wins against 4 AAs, 3 finalists, and 3 champs: Asper (AA) 3x; Courts (AA) 2x; Crutchmer (AA) 3x; Renda (AA); Avery (finalist); Hamlin (finalist); Heflin (finalist) 3x; Dean (2x champ); Martin (champ); Quentin Wright (2x champ).

Dude, if you only knew how stupid you sound; like an someone's jealous ex-boyfriend.  You remind me of these liberal imbeciles who could see Trump walking on water and say it's because he can't swim.
