Other than the stupidity of Kustra, another way to look at this is if wrestling was never dropped for baseball, it probably would have gotten dropped now, right?

Possibly not, considering all the expenditures BSU went through to get baseball up and running. Weren't they in the process of constructing their own on-campus stadium after the deal for the new minor league facility fell through? I imagine the athletic department might have been in much better shape financially.

It's just so crazy that after cutting wrestling and all the baseball drama, the program gets dropped after just 14 games. Womens swimming & diving also got cut - they had a home win streak going back to 2009 and 4 conference titles in the last 10 years. What a way to go out.

As a two-time graduate of Boise State this just makes me cringe.

The lying two-faced BASTARD that is now the FORMER school President (Robert Kustra) said on multiple occasions when he was the Boise State school President that "wrestling will NOT be eliminated" at Boise State.

Then right before he retires he eliminates the wrestling program (with a new head coach and new staff in their very first year at Boise State) just months before he is set to leave BSU.

He did this SPECIFICALLY to bring back Baseball at Boise State and they hadn't had a baseball team at Boise State since the 1970's (when I was going to college there).

In 2020 they bring back the baseball team - which did very well for a first year program - but end the season after only 14 games because of the INSANITY that is the Chinese Wuhan Virus.

And NOW they are dropping the Baseball program.

Someone NEEDS to make a movie about this travesty that is Boise State.   If chimpanzees were in charge at Boise State they absolutely could not do a worse job than what's been going on at Boise State the last five years.

They keep sending me cards (just got a birthday card yesterday from BSU) always asking me to send money.  I always return them with this reply  "Sorry but I do not support SOCIALIST organizations".

Hmmmm. Something tells me you have an agenda outside of just the wrestling issue.... just a hunch.

All for football, and none for all. Dont take this as a slight at wrestling. This is a slight at anyone besides football

Do we know how Baseball is doing in Eugene, Oregon?

U of O baseball continually loses money. Similar stories that BSU should have paid attention to.

Do any D1 baseball programs make money, thus not lose money?  Or wrestling?

According to this recent article (which is making some similar suggestions Wrestling fans are) , about 15 of 300 teams - https://www.omaha.com/sports/cws/raise-revenue-or-cut-costs-one-solution-could-do-both-and-save-college-baseball/article_43ebc05f-80ee-5bea-98b2-e2b990612064.html

Hard to find much on wrestling #’s by school, and even saw there was a thread last year on the topic that didn’t have many answers.  According to this from 2016 (page 26), the median wrestling team at FBS schools lost about $580k (but the median baseball team lost over $1mm - and the median baseball HC salary was just about 2x the median wrestling HC salary) - http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2017RES_D1-RevExp_Entire_2017_Final_20180123.pdf

Article says 5% are profitable but didn't see (skimmed it) any details or specifics on which programs, whether over time etc.  Does the author consider it "profitable" if revenue plus donations exceeds total operating expense or is it just direct revenue accrued to baseball from tickets, tv etc less expense?  Without the details hard to know what the 5% means.  But yeah like wrestling they pretty much all lose money.

From a 2019 article on NCAA baseball expenses:

"That, however, wasn’t a deterrent for Boise State, which added baseball for the 2020 season with a budget of $600,000 that will grow to $1 million over a to-be-determined number of years, based on how the program progresses. That sits in stark contrast to the national trend of cutting sports to save money.

'We’re a baseball town,' Broncos AD Curt Apsey said."

University of Oregon lost 1.3 million last year - perhaps the better question is which program loses the least amount?

Hard to find info on baseball but this article from 2016 shows that 4 of the 12 SEC baseball teams made money and one stayed even. The overall budgets of SEC athletics shows that every school made a profit for the year with Kentucky making the least profit at nearly 5 million. In short, the SEC could add wrestling for men and women if they wanted to.

Mind boggling.

There was suppose to be so much community support for the program.  That was the sales pitch.  It is pretty clear the support wasn’t there.

He's on the board at the local and biggest newspaper in Idaho, the Idaho Statesman.... you can read between the lines.

It's a sad deal for the baseball kids and swimming kids....they are now stuck in limbo and have had their goals and dreams squashed like wrestling did. In hindsight, about 75 kids total in the 3 sports have been devastated by BSU. If Kustra would have not had his ego to be the founding father of BSU baseball at any expense, we would have a wrestling team with 30 young men competing and may have even saved swimming with a more vigorous fund raising approach (which happened to try to save BSU wrestling). By the way, did that 25k donation for a new mat right before they cancelled the wrestling program ever get returned to the donor?
