Sports Illustrated article on Iowa wrestling

SI is a tarnished brand, but this is pretty cool just in how kind of run of the mill the article is. It didn't require some special event or human interest story, just regular coverage like a regular sport.

The author writes for the Daily Iowan, which explains the regular feeling of the coverage. SI fired all of their writers and now they just buy random articles from other sources. It isn't just tarnished, it is brutally bad.

Damn.  I knew about the Mavening of the site, but I didn't catch that part.

For a sport starved for coverage, there's nothing (really) wrong with this article.

The 2019 Hodge item is easily overlooked (typo, likely).

Is Eireman admitted to Iowa?

I never recall them having typos about Heisman Trophy winners.

To be overly simplistic, I would be shocked at any "regular" school (i.e. non-Tier 1 schools) that says no to any student offering to pay tuition this fall that carried at least a 1.75 GPA at their previous institution.

Yeah, not too hard to google.  SI can’t be bothered with this step I guess.

Actually the video got it right....connecting his 18-0 season with the Hodge Award, but it's wrong in the text of his season summary.  Not trying to defend SI believe me.   The do  a terrible job of covering wrestling AND they take up a spot on the mat at NCAA's, including finals, but you rarely see the photos in the magazine.  During finals  there are limited spots for media.

I don't see that (taking a space at finals) as being a problem in the future. The group that bought SI fired all the writers and photographers. Now they just buy articles and pictures from other sources. They do little to vet those sources for quality or accuracy. As a result the quality of the reporting has cratered. In this case we have an article written by a Daily Iowan reporter. This is not an SI staffer, because there are no SI staffers anymore. Don't expect much from SI and you will not be disappointed.

Maybe you are right.....I haven't been on the floor for a few years.

Another meaning of having been on the floor.

I was on the floor many years, as a coach and then with media.  I had a hand in some of the changes made in terms of photographers allowed at mat side for the finals of the NCAA tournament.  It's a long story.  Lot's of great memories on the floors and in the stands....42 NCAA's and maybe 26 Big Tens, in addition many other wrestling events....Fadz
