Can your state top N.J. 2006 state champs?

Recommended Posts

2006 group of N.J. state champs is definitely the best group in state history out of the 14 champs they had 4 ncaa champs (Burroughs,Molinaro, Caldwell and Zach Rey)

1 D3 champ (will Livingston)

2 multiple time AAs (Mike Grey, Frank Perelli)

2 four time ncaa qualifiers (Scott Winston, Alex Caruso)

1 2 time qualifier (Fred Santaite)

and out of the runner ups had D1 AA Scott Giffin

4 time ncaa qualifier Daryl cocozzo

3 three time qualifiers (Jimmy Conroy, Trevor melde, Dj Russo)

2 two time qualifiers ( vinny dellafave, John Trumbetti) and

a 2 time D3 AA Jesse Harrington

can anyone remember a group of finalists with this much ncaa success? I’m sure PA and Ohio have had some greats years

PA AAA 2010 was pretty good. One champ (Megaludis), but seven other DI AAs and three qualifiers. Just 3 of 14 didn't make an NCAA DI tournament.

103 - Santaite vs Schram (AA for Stanford)
112 - Perrelli vs Gulibon (AA for PSU)
119 - Trause vs Megaludis (4x AA, champ for PSU)
125 - Grey vs Port (3x AA, 2x finalist for Edinboro)
130 - Livingston vs Spearman (2x state champ, ran into some trouble after high school)
135 - Burroughs vs Dziewa (2x qualifier for Iowa)
140 - Molinaro vs Kindig (4x qualifier, runner up for OK St)
145 - Winston vs A. Alton (2x qualifier for PSU)
152 - Caldwell vs D. Alton (AA, 3x qualifier for PSU)
160 - Caruso vs M. Peppelman (qualifier for Cornell)
171 - Hogan vs Courts (AA, 3x qualifier for Ohio State)
189 - Dobish vs Callender (wrestled for Drexel, lots of injuries)
215 - Corcoran vs Myers (AA, 2x qualifier for Maryland)
285 - Rey vs Craig (started for Rider for 2 seasons)

NJ probably takes this dual based purely on college success.

2004 in Michigan, Davison has 3 NCAA chanps on the same high school team alone. Not sure the rest of the credentials from Michigan's champs that year.

This was just the Division 1 finals.  Diehl and Zeerip were in other classifications  - both started at Michigan and Zeerip was a 3 or 4 x qualifier.

103 Chad Schmitt (Kalamazoo Loy Norrix) Jack Cassedy (Dearborn) 9-4
112 Anthony Biondo (Clinton Twp. Chippewa Valley) John Johnson (Rockford) 1:14
119 Paul Donahoe (Davison) Owen Wilkinson (Hartland) 16-9
125 Jeff Clare (Walled Lake Western) Mike Peraino (Clinton Twp. Chippewa Valley) 5-3 (OT)
130 Tony Lajoie (Clarkston) David Brighton (Temperance Bedford) 2-1 (2 OT)
135 Jon Reader (Davison) Tim Hammer (Wayne Memorial) 7-5
140 Braden L'Amoreaux (Clarkston) Cory Rogers (Davison) 12-6
145 Brent Metcalf (Davison) Joe Caudill (Belleville) 25-10
152 Justin Petrone (Roseville) Eddie Skowneski (Clinton Twp. Chippewa Valley) 6-0

Honestly not fair if we go to other divisions, unless we just talk qualifiers.  There are a lot of D2/D3 qualifiers/placers as well as NJCAA from the pool of 56 state champs that year (Brew and Vanderhyde from Sparta H.S. were multiple time D3 placers for Olivet), as well as a slew of others.

I was just sticking to D1.

That's fine with me - too bad there isn't a way to plug in all the info in wrestlestat form and predict a winner in a dual.

03 probably has the best DI accomplishments for Michigan High School wrestlers across the divisions.

NCAA Champs:

1.)Reader(7,4,R12,1) took 3rd at 112 as a freshman.  Steintrager won that bracket and was the 8th seed wrestling for CMU as a senior(missed 2 seasons).

2.)Donahoe(R12,1,3,2) took 2nd at 119 as a freshman.  Shutich beat him 7-6.  Shutich was a 2 year starter for Michigan.

3.)Metcalf(DNQ,1,2,1) took 1st as a sophomore.

NCAA Finalists:

1.)Josh Churella(8,R12,2,4)took 1st at 135 as a senior.

2.)Roger Kish(R12,2,3,R12) took 1st at 189 as a senior.

3.)Wynn Michalak(8,8,R12,2) took 1st at 189 as a senior.

NCAA AA's:

1.)Bubba Gritter(DNQ,DNQ,5,7) took 1st at 275 as a senior.

2.)Brandon Sinnot(DNQ,0-2,7,5)   took 1st at 160 as a senior.

3.)Christian Sinnot(DNQ,1-2,R12,4)   took 2nd at 171 as a senior losing to Tim Breyer(2x Finalist).  Breyer wrestled for EMU.

Right I do agree with that. The question in the OP was what state has the best list of CHAMPS. I agree 03 is overall better.

Eric Guerrero (3 time NCAA champion)

Adam Tirapelle (NCAA Champion)

Mark Munoz (NCAA Champion)

Additional AAs and numerous NCAA qualifiers

Apple Valley team had Gross (2,1), Hall (1,2,2) and Steveson (3) wrestling together, all losing credentials from the lost NCAAs this year.

The AV team was rounded out by some other hammers as well.
