2006 group of N.J. state champs is definitely the best group in state history out of the 14 champs they had 4 ncaa champs (Burroughs,Molinaro, Caldwell and Zach Rey)

1 D3 champ (will Livingston)

2 multiple time AAs (Mike Grey, Frank Perelli)

2 four time ncaa qualifiers (Scott Winston, Alex Caruso)

1 2 time qualifier (Fred Santaite)

and out of the runner ups had D1 AA Scott Giffin

4 time ncaa qualifier Daryl cocozzo

3 three time qualifiers (Jimmy Conroy, Trevor melde, Dj Russo)

2 two time qualifiers ( vinny dellafave, John Trumbetti) and

a 2 time D3 AA Jesse Harrington

can anyone remember a group of finalists with this much ncaa success? I’m sure PA and Ohio have had some greats years

Also 2 Olympic team members

Yep, same time.  Not a huge stretch to think those 3 guys could have had NCAA finishes of (2,1,1), (1,2,2,1) and (3,1,1,1) by the end of their careers.  Impressive trio for one high school team.

Kellen Russell, 2x NCAA champ from New Jersey also should be included. He won Preps that year for Blair

Then you would have to include max Shanaman, Mario mason and Jared platt (RIP) because they are NJ guys that won preps too

mason was a 4x qualifier, I think he lost in the blood round a few times.

random fact, Rick flair son was also a starter on that Blair team

Yes, but none of them were ones to mention as per NCAA or national teams caliber.

And Flair is a stage name. His son was 189 Fliehr.

If we're including other championships and not just the actual sponsored state championship, then Mark Hall should have his transfered to Kentucky, or even further back Davison Michigan.

OP question was comparing to that specific 14 set of champions. If I werenjust using the state as criterium it gets muddy.

While Washington obviously doesn't compare to the heavyweights like Ohio, Jersey, and PA, our group of champs from '95 have probably been our best in the last 30 years.

Mat Orndorff, Kirk White, and Otto Olson lead the way, with a few other guys at the other levels.

I'm not going to go and look into the AA thing for anybody who didn't win a title in the NCAA, but two years stick out:

1994 California State Tournament:

112-Stephen Abas(3x NCAA champ, 4th as a freshman, 4x AA.  Olympic silver, NCAA 75th anniversary team, '99 Jr World champ)

130-Adam Tirapelle(1x NCAA champ, 3x AA)

138-Eric Guerrero(3x NCAA champ, 5th as a freshman, 4x AA.  4x US Open champ, Olympic team member and best hair of all-time in wrestling)

189-Stephen Neal(2x NCAA champ, 4x AA, 199 Hodge winner, 1999 Senior World Champ, 1999 FILA Outstanding wrestler.  Played in the NFL, 3x Superbowl champ)

1995 California State Tournament:

112-Stephen Abas(3x NCAA champ, 4th as a freshman, 4x AA.  Olympic silver, NCAA 75th anniversary team, '99 Jr World champ)

130-Adam Tirapelle(1x NCAA champ, 3x AA)

138-Eric Guerrero(3x NCAA champ, 5th as a freshman, 4x AA.  4x US Open champ, Olympic team member and best hair of all-time)

189-Mark Munoz((1x NCAA Champ, 3rd as a junior, 2x AA, Jr World Silver)

And both were in the famous winning dance contest team. Will was the one in black short and red shirt (I think striped). Hard to see but iirc Reece was the one that came out in the second group wearing white.

Maybe not as deep but some big names and multiple D1 champs plus an MMA champion and NFL player brother tandem...

2005 NY State Champs

96lbs: John Oschmann

103lbs: Austin Meys  -NCAA Qualifier 4th at Midlands with most Pins

112: Lou Ruggirello -NCAA Qualifier

119: Thomas Magnani: wrestled at Iowa for a short time

125: Troy Nickerson - NCAA Champ

130: JP OConnor - NCAA Champ

135: Paul Fiorio

140: Chris Wade - D3 All American and NJCAA Finalist

145: Gregor Gillespie -NCAA Champ

152: Ryan Patrovich- Multiple time NCAA qualifier

160: Alton Lucas : D1 All American

171: Ricky Scott Wrestled D1 at UB

189: Jon Bones Jones-MMA  Champ

215: Ed Bordas 2 time NCAA qualifier

285: Arthur Jones- NFL Player

2003 NYS also a very good group. JP O'Connor, Nickerson, Gillespie, and Josh Glenn all D1 champs, plus Arthur Jones (NFL), Gian Villante (UFC), along with a few other solid D1 guys.

A guy out of this champion class that I always wonder how he would have fared in D1 is Chris Hand. Three time champ. I believe he went on to play lacrosse in college; in my mind he was just as good as anyone in this class other than Nickerson.

He did wrestle one year in college. He was 9-1. Not sure what happened to him. But yes, he was amazing. https://www.cortlandreddragons.com/sports/2007/12/14/wresstats0506.aspx?id=16

My senior year, 85 in Pa (AAA)...we had 2 D1 NCAA Champs and 2 D1 NCAA Runner-Ups, a JUCO Natl Champ, several multi year NCAA qualifiers and 3 of us who played college football :)

We also whipped the USA Team in the Dapper Dan.

Nobody else at the level of NCAA high placer or world teamer.

That Blair team was filled with great NJ wrestlers that didn’t do well in college for one reason or another.

kellen Russell obviously the best

Mario mason was probably the 2nd best guy ...he was 4x qualifier

Eric Medina was 2nd at preps that year and he qualified as a freshman for Maryland then quit

Travis Blasco was supposed to go to Iowa then fell off the face of the earth

Jared platt was at penn state for a little but I know diabetes made it tough for him

max Shanaman  spent 4 years on the Cornell team and qualified his senior year, he may have made the blood round

joe stanzione was 2nd at preps that year and he was on the Cornell team for 4 years

Dan White from peddie also won preps that year from NJ and he had a lot of freestyle success but couldn’t stay healthy at Princeton

A lot of guys that seemed to burn out in that group, especially compared to the success the  NJ state champs went on have ,bc arguably at the time almost all of these guys would have beaten the state champ at their weight
