Russian Nationals 2020

Recommended Posts

Who will be watching?

Links can be found on the youtube channel below; although, many of you are in the USA, and will begin a little early/late:

https://www.youtube.com/user/WrestRusRu

Some of the bigger names competing:

57kg:  Zaur Uguev, Azamat Tuskaev, Ramiz Gamzatov, Akhmed Idrisov

61kg:  Aleksandr Bogomoev, Ramazan Ferzaliev

65kg:  Gazdhimurat Rashidov, Soslan Ramonov, Nachyyn Kuular, Akhmed Chakaev

70kg:  David Baev, Israil Kasumov, Magomedrasul Idrisov, Kurban Shiraev (Idrisov and Shiraev moved up to 70)

74kg:  Zaurbek Sidakov, Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov, Magomed Kurbanaliev, Razambek Zhamalov

79kg: Akhmed Gazhimagomedov, Gadzhi Nabiev

86kg:  Artur Naifonov, Dauren Kurugliev, Magomed Ramazanov, Radik Valiev

92kg:  Alikhan Zhabrailov

97kg:  Abdulrashid Sadulaev, Shamil Musaev, Magomedkhan Magomedov

125kg:  Anzor Khizriev, Zelimkhan Khizriev, Alan Khugaev, Baldan Tsyzhipov

I think the National winners will look very similar to the 2019 squad: Uguev, Bogomoev, Rashidov, Baev (or Shiraev), Sidakov, Gadzhimagomedov, Naifonov, Zhabrailov, Sadulaev and A. Khizriev.

But the Olympic weight classes are the ones that matter here.  Would have been nice to see Baev go to 65 or 74, Gadzhimagomedov to 86.  Should be good!

I thought Sidakov was not showing up?

Wrestling Beslan on Instagram (lol) is a pretty legit account and closer to Ossetian wrestling than anyone else, said Sidakov will be wrestling.  So, I think it is good to trust them here.

When does freestyle start?

57, 61, and 65kg categories will begin tomorrow at 11am Moscow time.  GMT+2.  So, 7 hours ahead of ET.

I also believe the medal matches will take place on the same day, according to schedule.

All the usual suspects! I'm glad to see Gazhimagomedov back, I don't care what weight he's at right now, and also Ramonov at 65. Kuular is also fun to watch at that weight. I like Baev at 65kg- he's too small for 74 IMO. Regardless, I love me some Russian Nats- the level of wrestling up and down the brackets is always stellar!

Muskaev wins 1-1 over Ugaev. Surprised, nothing but hand fighting. Thought there would be fireworks.

I had thought that was Ugaev (in red) that won 1-1 - It was a very slow match

That's my bad. Muskaev and Tuskaev are totally different guys. Duh, Muskaev used to wrestle for Russia at 57 but now wrestles for Hungary and was up at 65 in 2019. How could I forget the epic Yianni comeback when Muskaev (HUN) gassed?

Rashidov beats Chakaev 2-0. Not too much action in that match either.

60kg just finished.

I was on the hop during the first few hours this morning so I could free up my focus for now!

Edit....just realized that may have been a replay I was watching. I don't know.

Agree. I’m shocked neither of those two committed to an Olympic weight. Is there any incentive for them to stay in the non-Olympic weights? Like do they get compensated for winning nationals? Or do they just think that it doesn’t matter if they win an Olympic weight... the committee will pick someone else as the Olympic rep anyway?

So both Gazimagomedov's are going to be left at home for the Olympics?

It would seem likely, right? Can the one from 70 kg go up and beat out Sidakov and Tsabolov? I doubt that. Maybe the one from 79 would have a chance 86 because Russia isn’t that deep there? Unfortunately, there’s a ton of talent left behind with only six weights. We will see it in the US too.

Yeah I’ve since realized that, I blew that one didn’t I!

But yes better late than never and to me it’s like I was watching it live, so what the hell.
