HS wrestlers in Michigan required to wear masks during matches

Recommended Posts

I think we have to be honest and realize that the high school season is not sustainable this year. Masks are impractical and really won't be effective since there is no way to avoid close and sustained contact in wrestling. Until a cheap, effective and rapid test system is implemented along with better therapeutics and a vaccine, HS wrestling needs to pause.

So when the mask comes/tears off or slides down the face (unmasking), does the referee immediately stop the match. This could get crazy very quickly; if it occurs during a potential scoring sequence does the ref allow the action to be completed, or does he immediately stop it? If the latter, look for intentional unmasking to prevent scoring by the opponent. Don't kid yourself it will happen.

Of course it will happen.

'Hands to the face' will be called very liberally this season.

There are masks that wrap, securely, around the back of the head specifically for athletics. They aren’t going to be wearing the paper ones that hang around ears.

Wisconsin is also doing the masks. The masks are considered to be part of the uniform.

Also, no hand shaking before or after match. But touch each other constantly during the match. LOL

Wonder how many matches I'll whistle-stop because the mask slides down to a wrestler's throat while he is getting pinned?

To add to that misery,  the refs also wear the masks.

Refs also to raise color of the winning wrestler, no lifting of arms.

If you think I'm being lassizfaire about Covid, I'm not. Wife and I had it, and it was brutal. But I see the masks ( for the wrestlers at least) as a problem.

Hands to own face will be a new penalty as they try to pull off their own masks when about to be taken down or pinned.

Of course, facts mean nothing in Michigan with that governor and that football coach.

What you meant to say was "facts mean nothing to the Federalist Society," right?

Are wrestlers in these states still required to wear masks during the match?  How is it working?  Genuinely curious.  Here in Missouri, we're not wearing masks during the match.
