Iowa Head Coach Tom Brands Tests Positive for COVID-19

IOWA CITY, Iowa --
University of Iowa head wrestling coach Tom Brands has tested positive for COVID-19. Brands tested positive during his regularly scheduled rapid antigen test Wednesday morning, followed by a PCR test to confirm the diagnosis.

Brands is asymptomatic and will remain home until Feb. 13. Wrestlers, coaches, and staff members are tested daily as part of the Big Ten Conference return to play protocols.

Iowa wrestles Sunday in West Lafayette, Indiana, against Purdue and Ohio State.

“Our guys are preparing for competition just as they always do. We are ready to go,” Brands said. “I will continue to work remotely. We have a good thing going and we are going to keep moving forward. Right now our focus is on Purdue and Ohio State.”

The top-ranked Hawkeyes are 3-0 this season with five Big Ten duals remaining on the schedule. The Big Ten Championships are March 6-7. The NCAA Championships are March 18-20.

During the recent Iowa dual stream, Tom often had his mask down when the camera went to the corner. Not a good look the PR department might have to deal with.

Eh that is the case for pretty much all sports coaches...

Big contrast at the OSU-Maryland dual. Tom Ryan pretty much didn't wear his mask, and he definitely never spoke while wearing it. In the other corner, Alex Clemsen was wearing a surgical mask with a gaiter over it, and he never took it off.

If you've been in the wrestling room every single day without a mask and you have been going thru testing every week, is it really going to matter if masking or not during the 1.5hr dual while around the same guys you've been in the room with every day?

Ryan doesn't do vaccinations. OSU is immune. All prayed away.

Yes, because you'll be near trainers, refs, scoreboard operators and a slew of other people you aren't around every day

There's no reason to be near the refs or the scoreboard operators, they are around their trainers every day.

I have zero issue in letting his COVID contraction play out before flying off the handle. I think too many are quick to claim they are right rather than search for what is right.

And still, if I’m right, I probably won’t fly off the handle.

Fire up any dual this year, the coaches are often near the refs and to go the scorers table.

I realize that, you see it in bb & football also in b10 etc they think its more important to do things that don't matter, wear ineffective masks improperly rather than do what's important, stay 6 to 10 feet away from officials etc.  All seems to be for show not based on science.  First coach that violated the 6 to 10' shouldve been kicked out, behavior wouldve changed quickly.

<clip>speaking loudly, laughing, shouting, screaming can also increase the release of aerosols in the air, allowing the SARS Cov 2 virus to eject and spread around causing Covid 19.

Behaviours in closed environments that can lead to aerosol generation are loud singing, talking loudly in office corridors, speaking or calling out colleagues from one corner to another, in an asymptomatic patient will allow for the spread of the virus around.

Why do they need to take the mask off to talk anyway?   It's not like it keeps sound in

But you can't read his lips otherwise!

I did a broadcast last weekend wearing a mask the whole time and nobody seemed to complain. Now I wonder how many people were listening...
