Cuestas transferred from D-1 Cal Poly to join Joe Gonzales. I believe Dan won 2 titles while Joe won 1 (he lost to Gene Mills in an amazing match in 81)

Actually he lost to Mills in that amazing match in 79 and then won NCAAs in 1980 and graduated.

Mills also did some pretty remarkable weight-cutting during his college years.   Supposedly he weighed around 148 pounds by the time he stepped on the mat for the finals.

"Supposedly"? Do you really think that's true or even close to true?

I never heard that story about Gene when he was wrestling, but I bet he's pushing a lot more than 148 now :D He looks like a plump used-car salesman nowadays :D He looks strong though.

And the next year Mark Shultz went up a weight and beat Banach in a great match

Mark Schultz was my wrestling hero when I was in HS.  Wish there hadn't been that big meltdown with him all those years ago, Mark should be coaching a great program somewhere.

I read it in Amateur Wrestling News back in the 1980s.  I'll try to find the exact reference.

I went and watched his finals match against Gonzalez. He looks no bigger than Gonzo and the announcers said how Gonzo looks 10-15 pounds heavier.

I know Pat Milkovich is on here so he probably won't like this- but my understanding (from Lehigh coaches and Mike Frick) is that Grady Penager (MSU coach)  complained about how big Mike was. They got on the scale and Mike was actually slightly lighter (I think just a pound or two) with neither very far over.

Being that i was born six years after this match, this was my first time watching this epic battle. That was a fun watch!
