Re: Ruth and 2 NCAA champs with major dec...

Recommended Posts

A fan from Minny recently asked me if I knew of any 3x+ NCAA champs, that have all won their NCAA title bouts by bonus points? I realize it is a huge assumption that Ruth wins another title by bonus but thought I'd throw it out there. (My hunch is that has to be someone)

Cael had 2 major decision wins out of his 4 titles.

Dake had zero bonus wins out of his 4 titles.

Pretty sure McIllravy did not win any of his 3 titles by bonus.

*extent of my research at this point*

Just curious since the Minny fan asked.

The biggest credentialed match up to date is still Banach vs Schultz. Two three timers going at it in the finals. Ed was almost the first 4 timer and Mark majored him 16-8. That is the best hands down finals performance to me. That would have been like if Taylor majored Dake to keep him from being a 4 timer.

Well who else won 3 titles all by bonus?

Dan Hodge and Earl McCready at a minimum.

You are right, I was relying on the list of 3 and 4 timers above for my research and just now noticed those are the champions that had already been researched. Thanks for the correction.

Not quite. You just witnessed Dake and Taylor with 4 titles between them when they walked out there. Mark Schultz had one title and Ed Banach had 2 when they stepped on the mat. They were both juniors at the time.

Thanks, I just looked up all the 3 timers posted above and none of them won all 3 by bonus. A few won 2 by bonus..Hodge and McCready were not listed above.

In fact, during three NCAA tournaments only two of Hodge's opponents were able to avoid being pinned.
