Zelph 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2013 David Taylor came out and quickly went after Kyle Dake and got a takedown. Dake ends up with an escape in short order. Taylor looks like he is excited and aggressive a few more times but mainly seems contented to tie and wait while trying one move at a time. No chain wrestling. Gone is the aggression of the first takedown. Both on their knees at times just stalling away without any real attempt at anything. Taylor let it slip away while Dake was content to win ugly while stalling/busyworking his way around the mat on top. Taylor may well have won if he had wrestled all out the whole match. He had Dake on the defensive when he was doing this.
whyme25 54 Report post Posted March 31, 2013 He got road like sea biscuit, end of story, end of match. Is it possible he just got beat by a better wrestler :?:
dsnc471 25 Report post Posted March 31, 2013 But how do you figure he should have gone all out for an entire match? If he wrestled like a bat out of hell he would have either gassed, and then Dake would win easily, or he'd have gotten sloppy. Taylors first takedown was nice, definitely, but that was the first takedown either one of them ever had in three matches, so it's not easy. And when Taylor threw a leg in on top and got muscled for an almost reversal, I think that shows how difficult it is to wrestle Dake.

Zelph 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2013 Your poster shows water falling, not tears. Wrong, just as your view on this. Taylor should be in good enough condition to force the entire match and be ready for chain wrestling to counter Dake's counters. Gable did this. So did Cael. Mark Schultz did it against Banach. rodneydeeeee 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2013 Normally agree with us dsnc, but Taylor is all out aggressive in all his matches so this shouldn't be any different. I feel as though he could take Dake down a few times if he wrestled better under pressure and just wrestled all match. Of course you can't take anyone down while being ridden all match. OCGrappler 44 Report post Posted March 31, 2013 Taylor might have gotten spooked by the freestyle match. Both time he got aggressive, he wound up on his back.

flaBigRedfan 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2013 WOW. you guys are still talking about David Taylor should have won. Congratulations Kyle Dake. You just beat a wrestler in the NCAA finals - for the third time this season only because he didn't choose the right strategy to beat you - ever. Perhaps if he had a better coach (you know, one that was better than someone who had won 3 straight NCAA team championships and 4 individual titles himself), he would have beaten you. Because, you know, it had nothing to do with your wrestling ability at all. Maybe you should Play the lottery too

He's 4-0 against Taylor - at some point this discussion gets ridiculous. One guy is better, end of story.
redblades 322 Report post Posted March 31, 2013 Someone (I think HatchetJack?) posted several days and threads ago a link to photos on the Cornell Facebook site, here it is again: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set= ... 988&type=3 There are some pretty dramatic shots of Dake's stalling/busywork. Looks to me, Dake got BUSY! (ypu can double click any image to see it larger) (Photos by Lindsey Mechalik) Enjoy!

Brutus81 4 Report post Posted March 31, 2013 I agree, but think that you have to give Dake credit. I think DT got the quick takedown, but then, almost immediately, got reversed (it ended up just being an escape). and went into his shell. Getting ridden out the whole next period obviously didn't help his aggressiveness. But I think he felt something in that first flurry that made him uncomfortable, like if he opened up, he wouldn't be able to control where it went . . . redwhiteblue 0 Report post Posted April 2, 2013 Taylor did not give up on his aggressiveness, Dake adjusted. Taylor successfully hand-fought to a good righthand collar tie early and got the takedown as a result. After that, Dake had greater success controlling that right hand and preventing the collar tie that burned him early. Dake's handfighting is not "busywork," it is for a purpose. Scoring points is sometimes great offense, sometimes poor defense. Lack of offense is sometimes stalling, sometimes great handfighting. Taylor did not just "shut down" on his feet, he was shut down by Dake, big difference.
zeeb 0 Report post Posted April 2, 2013 Serious question: How many times would Dake have had to beat Taylor before you guys would stop arguing that Taylor is better than Dake? Three times obviously wasn't enough. Would 4 have done it? 5? 10?
Alwayswrestling 227 Report post Posted April 2, 2013 Right now Dake is just the better wrestler of the two.
wrestlpsu 6 Report post Posted April 2, 2013 david has never beaten dake....at least that most people know of. sometimes someone is just better than someone else.....wouldnt matter what they did differently....the other person will always better them. the build up was great....the match was soso (refs neglect stalling).... and the better guy won. I feel as though he could take Dake down a few times if he wrestled better under pressure and just wrestled all match. Of course you can't take anyone down while being ridden all match. Being all out agressive against a guy you can outmatch is much different than going all out against an equal or greater opponent. Against superior guys one has to fight the whole time in all positions, which causes one to expend their energy. Taylor scoring at will against someone he has completely outmatched and going all out and fighting for every position/point against someone of the caliber of Dake are two completely different animals and one takes much more energy/conditioning than the other. Look no further than the Metcalf - Caldwell finals match a few years ago as an example.

OtisCampbell 94 Report post Posted April 2, 2013 What most people discount in this match-up is the psychology of winning close matches. Taylor is one of the best at exploiting guys he out classes, but he has very little experience with close matches. Dake has had plenty of experience in close matches, and he is one of if not the best ever at winning them. He does not panic and or shut down. In all of Taylor's loses in college he looks like he is holding something back. With the level of wrestling these two both bring to the table, I have no doubt that this match-up is being decided between the ears.
DocRevue 0 Report post Posted April 2, 2013 He got road like sea biscuit, end of story, end of match. Is it possible he just got beat by a better wrestler :?: Exactly. Dake rode Taylor's guts out. It's hard to be aggressive when you're just trying to get to a base. Midway through the third period, Taylor looked shot. Then, like the champ he is, Taylor got it together and made a run at Dake, and it wasn't enough. Two great wrestlers and a good match. I know Taylor is amazing but Dake finished 3-0 against him in folk. Dake just really is that good.

Why is it so hard to accept that maybe Dake is the Cael/Schultz in this match up? Dake's a beast, man. The near reversal showed this - Taylor is a great rider, and Dake just shook him off like the Incredible Hulk.
brianj 4 Report post Posted April 2, 2013 At the end of that match (I know that the timing on the tv does not always match) with 3 seconds to go it seemed as if Taylor was done and just reached down and took his anklets off.
