Wrestling Got Some Run in Last Nights Dodgers Game

Recommended Posts

Orel Hershiser brought up how the pressure as a pitcher facing the Dodgers lineup would be similar to a wrestler wrestling up a couple of weight classes.

Joe Davis, who announces the games with him, asked Hershiser if he wrestled.  Hershiser said he did for a couple of years as a kid.

As the game progressed, Davis mentioned that Dodgers player Chris Taylor wrestled as a youth but stopped when his coach wanted him to cut from 110 down to 103. Davis went on to say that Taylor's father and grandfather both wrestled at Virginia Tech, and that his father was in their HOF (Chris Taylor played baseball at UVA).

They then went on to talk about another "Chris Taylor", former Iowa State national champion and US Olympian (stating that he was the heaviest Olympic wrestler on record).

Very cool.  I'm sure most of you know this already, but Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto is John Smith's nephew.

Yes, supposedly the best athlete in the Smith family.  Won a state championship in football (starting QB) and was a decent basketball player.  Would've been fun to see what he could've done on the mat.

Older generation, but Ed Ott, who caught for the Pirates and others was a PA runner-up.  He later showed his wrestling ability in an infamous, short brawl at second base after Felix Millan of the Mets pushed a baseball in his face and Ott double legged him and came down hard on Millan shoulder.   There are phots of this if you google.  I was watching the game and instantly knew he had wrestled.

Ott was also a coach at Houston when there was a bench clearing brawl and he headlocked and held Rob Dibble of the Reds to keep him calm.

I thought Iceman quit wrestling and became a fighter!

Ott should have received a major Suspension when he attacked Mike Schmidt from behind. Probably cost the Phillies the Eastern division Pennant that year.

Schmidt hit homer in a game then got beaned.

Phils went somewhere. In that series Each game he hit a homer.

Then faced the pirates again. Schmidt again hit a Homer, Beaned again. Went towards the mound finally, And that is when Ott assaulted him. Pece of $hit decision by  by ML President to find against Schmidt.
