AnklePicker 643 Report post Posted May 8, 2021 one of our guys wins a world title while beating a Russian or former Russian in every round? I get we have guys doing it as well, but this is a major problem.

Are Spain, UK, Belgium and France going to start winning medals that way. It really doesn't help that Freestyle wrestling's popularity is so concentrated in just a couple of regions. LifeintheRed 81 Report post Posted May 8, 2021 (edited) In the 2019 World Championships, Jordan Burroughs wrestled the following competitors on the front side of the bracket in this order: 1/16 - Azamat Nurykau - Belarus - born in Russia 1/8 - Murad Kuramagomedov - Hungary - born in Russia 1/4 - Khadzhimurad Gadzhiyev - Azerbaijan - born in Russia 1/2 - Zaurbek Sidakov - Russia - born in Russia All but Sidakov are Dagestani. The French 'russians' were all raised in France and were developed in the French wrestling system. Zelimkhan Khadjiev, Ilman Mukhtarov, and Akhmed Aibuev are of Chechen heritage and immigrated to France as refugees when their parents brought their families over during the Chechen wars. I think the oldest of them was 11 when they got to France. It's a much different situation than when wrestlers transfer from Russia to other counties because they are recruited by coaches or by searching for a new federation on their own after realizing they will likely never make a world/olympic team competing for Russia. 4 maligned, Drake_Mallard, Jim L and 1 other reacted to this

That's brutal. Having to face three straight Dagestani, then having to face the guy who is the reason they are all wrestling for a different country. Brutal. 1 1 jackwebster and wrestlingnerd reacted to this
D3 for LU 58 Report post Posted May 8, 2021 (edited) On this topic... I was watching the Barcelona Olympics '92 on NBC's Triplecast. During one of the later rounds in the freestyle tournament, the NBC commentators had Bobby Douglas in the booth for a short interview about the tournament and the future... w/ a focus on what will happen when the Soviet Union is gone and all the non-Russian countries separate from it. As you all know, the USSR had virtually the 1st, 2nd, and very likely the 3rd best wrestlers in the world in their depth charts. In short order to answer the question, Bobby said... "it wouldn't matter. They're ALL Russian." (Or something along the similar thoughts... hey, that conversation was all the way back in '92 ;-P ) Meaning, the USA wouldn't have to get by just ONE wrestler that had the Star, Hammer and the Sickle... they would have to get by a bunch of 'stans, and other former Soviet connected provinces. You folks can see that already in the medals/ placing all these past years. D3 Edited May 8, 2021 by D3 for LU

Have some of the post soviet countries added depth to the field? Sure, Georgia for sure is talent rich and makes things tougher. Couple other countries like Ukraine or Belarus contribute . Wrestlers from Russian federation freestyle rich regions going through bureaucratic hoops to join countries with poor wrestling programs just because of the one per nation rule is a problem and different from what the nbc guys talked about. TripNSweep 735 Report post Posted May 8, 2021 Winning a medal now is a lot tougher than it was when the Soviet Union existed. Suriano had to wrestle a Russian twice in Italy, but he wrestles for Turkey now. There have been a lot of Russian exports for wrestling. Sabejew for Germany was a world champion. Pliev made the Olympics for Canada. Batirov wrestles for Bahrain now. Qatar has a former Russian I think now.

Boxing gives two bronze without even having a match. You lose in the semi's, you get bronze.

How about Taekwondo? I think the two bronze was an attempt to be like all the other combat sports.

I’m going to assume several of the individual sports with a single entry per weight class had the same push to instill the double bronze. Especially as they were cutting back on weight classes. Its basically a move to spread medals out between more counties. For countries that traditionally have a low medal count it give them a little more of a chance. The random draw and the repachage helps out that one too. Edited May 9, 2021 by MadMardigain

Some nations' only medals in the entire games are from wrestling.
