The drums are beating and Japan has done an absolutely terrible job at not only testing but vaccinations and are now finally  paying the price for that now.

14X fewer tests per population than the US and 25X fewer Vaccinations.

Tests per person in the US 1.4X, tests per person in Japan 0.1X.

Vaccination rate in the US ~ 50%, Vaccination rate in Japan ~2%. Why is it so low? Because the Japanese gov't has repeatedly lied to the Japanese of the safety of vaccines.

There is no question in my mind that Japan tried to cover up the degree of spread by not doing tests in hopes of salvaging the Olympics. We are talking about national pride here which is paramount in Japanese culture. It worked for a while but they are now getting overwhelmed and paying the price and their health system is crumpling under the weight.

Right now the only Japanese eligible for vaccines are those over 65 and health care workers. WTF???

The Olympics should be cancelled or moved. 83% of Japanese wants the Olympics to be canceled. Masa San the richest man in Japan finally came out today against Japan holding the olympics.

Another stat from Japan that my shed light into the culture and corruption . The conviction rates in their courts are 99.8%. In the US it is 75-85%. It's been labeled by some as the most corrupt corrupt court system in the world.

Disclaimer: I am not Japanese abut Taiwanese. Both of my parents are fluent in Japanese because they grew up under Japanese rule and they have a very strong and actually positive view of Japanese culture. They pay extra for Japanese cable and watch it daily. So I have a unique perspective on Japanese culture through them.

Very interesting, and maybe not surprising.  I remember reading how much better Japan and India did at handling this thing than the US.  While it may be true, I also thought it was possible they did a better job of "juking the stats."

DocBZ - Your assessment of the Japanese handling of the corona virus problem is ignorant at best.  Japan a country of 126 million people many of whom a quite elderly has had 12. 600 deaths due to this pandemic.  There are at least 14 US states that have exceeded that #.    The US has had roughly 1800 people per million die vs Japan which has had 95 per million die from the same virus.  I would say Japan is doing pretty well.  As for vaccinations they held off starting as they did more stringent testing on the vaccines.  They really just started rolling out the vaccines after February.  The attached article shows the projected schedule.  I would say that Japan handled this pandemic much better than us or most European countries.  The important #s speak for themselves.  https://www.timeout.com/tokyo/news/heres-the-tentative-timeline-of-japans-covid-19-vaccination-programme-012021

Why not just mandate vaccination for all participants, have intake testing, and then keep everyone quarantined throughout the competition?

I respect you have a unique viewpoint of this.  You sound mad at and generally critical of Japan overall.

Where does taiwan sit now in terms of vaccination %?  I know China is at ~10%, but the sky isn’t falling there.  Yes Japan has a very low vax rate. The criminal system is a completely different topic (and dumpster fire) altogether.

What you’re leaving out is that, interpersonally, Japan is approximately 1,000x more respectful and civic minded from a responsibility standpoint than another country of your choice.  The obedience and compliance the social pressure and sense of responsibility creates in this scenario is a very real and positive outlier.

Also, while a very old country, the average elderly person in Japan is metabolically waaaay ahead of their counterparts around the globe.

Because Japan is worried about the athletes infecting the unvaccinated Japanese population. A solution is to require vaccination for those competing and keep them quarantined.  The odds of it spreading with 2 layers of control like that should be very low.

The odds of the boogie bug having any real impact has been very low since day one...

but again...

hard to grandstand on that fact...

Not at all. Been to Japan many times and will go back again (Akihabara may be my favorite place on the planet). Great country and great people with an amazingly deep and rich culture. But I don't trust the Japanese government and neither do the Japanese people. Why don't they trust the government? Well read below...

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/12/23/national/japan-vaccine-history-coronavirus/

BTW Taiwan curve looks even worse than Japan's right now and their testing and vaccination rate has been even lower. It's just a matter of time before their hospitals get overrun. And no I don't trust the Taiwanese government either or the US government for that matter. Keep in mind that there was a time when people were wondering why India's rates were so low.

As for another poster. I never said he US response to Covid has been good, its was abysmal to begin and early on far worse than Japan...but now we are finally getting it under control while Japan's crisis is exploding.

Wow, thank you, that’s great info.  Man, I really hope they do this whole Olympics thing without some big problems.

I'm pretty sure in one of the videos that I've seen he said he was vaccinated, though I can't remember which one.

Japan is doing well overall, but their deaths are currently higher than they've been since the start of the pandemic.   Although for that reason I doubt they were ever "covering up the degree of spread in order to salvage the Olympics."  If that were the case, now would be the time to cover it up...

Probably more along the lines of "virus gonna virus"  since they had kept it at bay for the most part previously.  I didn't realize that their vaccination % was so low before this thread though.    Always learn new things from themat forums.

Do we get another chance to qualify 65 if they’re postponed?

First time they were postponed everyone already qualified through 2019 worlds and the one continental qualifier that happened held their Olympic spot, so probably not.
