Does being a 4X high school champ increase the likelihood of being an NCAA champ?

Recommended Posts

What's funny is that on the list of 4x champs from AZ only one of them won an NCAA championship. Larkin, Gallick, and Urbano were only 2x or 1x champions. Also a few guys who won D2 or NAIA aren't on that list either. Linsacum, Torrejon and Armenta are the ones I know.

Completely cherry picking data but makes for impressive results.  If you strip out NY to only wrestlers who are done competing and only 4x'ers in the D1 tournament 4 out of 5 won NCAAs with the 5th being multiple time AA Nick Piccininni who recorded wins over multiple NCAA champs including Darion Cruz and Spencer Lee.  Pretty impressive group!

yes but he hates to be called that.

At one point he was merely a regular college freshman called Jeff who had agreed to enter into the warm glow of the Ohio State tanning beds.  However, once he emerged from the violet lights his body had transcended into the cradle locking machine to know be only known as J.

New Jersey has only one state champion for each weight class each year.  No subdivisions by school size, private academies, or parochial.  Therefore, it's really tough to be a state champ in NJ.  You win, you da man.

Bruce Kelly St. Mark's 1995-98 (112-119-119-125)-Never qualified-Lehigh

Bruce Kelly qualified and went 1-2 at the 2000 NCAA tournament.  He was the EIWA champion that year.  I believe he tore his ACL while red shirting the following year, had replacement surgery. Tore the replacement ACL the next year, then retired.

TJ Hill 1xAA, Shon Fry 2xAA, Alan Waters 2xAA, Daniel Lewis 4xAA. In addition that I could think of.

Fry was a 3X state champion.  His brother did win four, but he was never a AA.

Putting together some data, if you know of a place to get it for your state, send it to me.

*Thanks to the guy who does not like Republicans @JasonBryant's Almanac it has made it a lot easier to verify NCAA placings.
