Olympics on the verge of being cancelled

Recommended Posts

Top sponsors are all pulling out at the last minute, COVID 'bubble' is a farce, and now top government officials openly questioning whether it will proceed. All while nearly 60 percent of the Japanese public wanted it cancelled weeks ago.

We keep this up and we won't make it to wrestling.

And I’m not even supposed to BE here today!

Says the guy who once gleefully posted something about J'Den Cox putting a hex on the Olympics or something similarly ridiculous.

You know the Olympics actually starts in less than two hours, right? There's three softball games being played tonight, then soccer starts a few hours later.

I doubt they cancel--it'd be a huge fiasco and an embarrassment to Japan--but it's interesting that top officials are not denying that it might happen.

The athletes are basically all there now, it's going to start today, I just don't think there's any way it gets cancelled at this point. It's going to be grit and get through it.

Was this the same Tokyo organizing committee official that sparked all the cancellation rumors a few months ago, only to get slapped down by the IOC?

This whole thing is a dumpster fire for Japan.  Tens of billions spent on infrastructure. No tourists to pay for it.  Drastically reduced sponsorships. Less than 10% vaccination rate. A population that has one of the highest median ages in the world. What else can go wrong for them?

Why in the world does Japan have such a low vaccination rate? That makes no sense with the Olympics or even w/o the Olympics.

The answer to this is something that the media will not show you, namely that vaccine skepticism is strong in many countries around the world. According to a Lancet study, Japan has one of the lowest rates of vaccine confidence in the world, with fewer than 30% of the people agreeing that vaccines were safe, important, and effective. As a metric, the number in the US is 50%. Japan has had a rough history with vaccines, going back to at least the early 1992 when people suspected that the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) inoculation lead to higher rates of aseptic meningitis. The shots were discontinued and to this day Japan doesn't recommend a combined MMR shot. Also, in 1992 a court ruling made the government responsible for any adverse reactions related to vaccines, and also categorized suspected side effects as adverse reactions. Compare this to the US, where vaccine developers are immune from liability in civil actions for damages arising from a vaccine related injury or death, even if there is clear evidence of negligence. And if you think the US government will accept responsibility for long term adverse effects, especially in vaccines administered under EUA (Emergency Use Authorization) instead of formal FDA approval, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell you.

Here in Taiwan, the people have been grateful to the Japanese for the nearly 4 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine that have been gifted to the Taiwanese people. They are mostly unaware that the Japanese government has decided NOT to vaccinate their population with AZ vaccines because of the blood clot issue, so the 30 million AZ vaccines in their hands will be donated, and who knows what they will do with the other 90 million AZ vaccines they have ordered.

In addition to the above, Japan was very late in approving a vaccine because the country will not approve a vaccine unless the clinical trials were done in Japan. Thus vaccines were not approved in Japan until months after the rest of the world.

The reaction to the AZ vaccine is a prefect example of not understanding asymmetric risks.

Do you mean an example of a prefect, or important government or police official, not understanding asymmetric risks, or maybe the other definition, an older student given responsibility to control the younger students, not understanding asymmetric risks? Or perhaps you misspelled "perfect", and prefects play no part in your statement at all.
