It happens in other sports.  I'm a boxing fan and saw Oliver McCall experience a mental breakdown in the ring and have to stop.  Dude had been World Champion.  In short, despite being "a coward" he'd kick the sh!t of of anyone on this board with ease.  In his sport, people die.  You keep going when you're not all there mentally or physically, your life is on the line.

And I remember diver Sergei Chalibashvili dying after hitting his head on the platform.  In precision sports like that, tenths of inches can be life and death.  This is not about "toughing it out" with a torn ACL--been there, done that.  And God bless every Kurt Angle who can pull it off, winning a gold with a broken neck (I tried to compete with one and can testify that is one unbelievable feat on Angle's part to do it at that level).  It was his choice and it paid off.

And we all know the story of Scotty Pippen refusing to go back into a game when the coach called on him--he quit.  And in wrestling how often do we see a guy losing in the semis and then just "quit" and default down to 6th--happens in pretty much every major event, so much so that it's no longer surprising and barely questioned.  And being from Detroit I have to listen to how Barry Saunders was a "quitter" and could have played another five seasons.

Of course, no one is mentioning that officials decided not to reward Biles' degree of difficulty because she was so advanced over the competition.  Like telling the pin specialist that we're no longer going to call pins or backpoints because you pin just about everyone.  As if the pressure wasn't great enough.

Everyone's an expert who's never been in the champion's shoes.  And lack of understanding of mental health issues and conditions is vividly illustrated on this thread.  As Teddy Roosevelt said, "“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena."  Biles chose to not step into arena this time for reasons she knows better than anyone else (even posters on a wrestling chatroom), and that "stumble" is going to leave her judged by some as a "coward," "loser," etc., for the rest of her life.  She has more balls than anyone on this thread.

It is amazing that folks would rather coddle than show patriotism in a 2021 Olympic Games that we thought we'd never have.

Hell, I am pretty sure that there is a thread still going strong with folks still claiming it's being cancelled yesterday.

That said, I am sure Mizzoudude would welcome you all over in Bulgaria, or wherever he is at now.

We should all be bleeding red, white, and blue right now.

If Gillman, who is injured or has been, were to pull out due to 'mental health reasons' would you all coddle him as well?  No.  You'd say 'Wrestling is a mental toughness sport... yada yada.'  Well guess what?  Gymnastics, and basically any sort of sport aside for this new gen crap, is also a mental sport.  They wouldn't get to where they are without mental toughness.  So to pull out now, barring some sort of familial death or something equally traumatizing, appears cowardice.

It was barely a week ago there was an article on ESPN stating that she would be judged different because she is head and shoulders so much better than anyone and in that article they quoted her saying that she accepted and expected that.  Two days later she says she doesn't have the mental toughness?  She is afraid of failing.  Bad coaching to prepare her for the possibility that she might fail once in a while.  Cowardice on her part for not actually understanding that.

I wish her the best as a person, and I hope she can nut up and put on a show for years to come for us.  As I said before, it isn't us four or five pathetic keyboard warriors she needs to worry about.  She'll never see our posts or hear our criticisms.  Just as Pippen did when he was called a quitter, she will get it even worse.  Death threats, hate mail... it's going to be very bad for her.  She thought she had poor mental constitution before?  She's going to have it tested and pushed on such a personal level over the course of the next many years outside of gymnastics now.

Oh. So I misunderstood that you follow the team closely. So you don’t, and you running around acting like you’re peeved, as if you’ve been victimized or something, is in fact just an act so it gives you something to whine about!

No.  You were being sarcastic.  I'm an idiot but idiot enough to see that.  Meaning yes I do follow the sport.  I have a daughter that is into it heavily on the regional circuits.  She has friends that are very close to her that have gone to the ORTC this cycle for preparation and hopes that they would be on the team.

Also, we all have been victimized.  We thought we were sending a patriot.  We sent a coward, instead.

Couple thoughts

Almost all of the harshest critics of SB are the type that would say “I’d have plagued in the NFL for way less than these ‘selfish’ players”. Thereby revealing they were never actually good enough to play at that level. So 90% of what they’re saying is from jealously and wishing they had that ability and chance. It’s usually the same kind of person who takes little kid wrestling as seriously as hs or above so they can act like they belong in the big boy club of coaches for what a 6 year old did. 

additionally. A person like JB or SBs bad day where they “quit” or “underperform”. Is better than what the harshest critics will ever achieve in their lives. Which explains how vitriolic they’re getting. yeah Roberto Duran quit against Sugar Ray… he’s still way tougher than you’ll ever be. There’s levels.

So some of you people criticizing her need to calm the hell down. 

Now, do I do I wish she competed? Yes. Do I think she’s being given a little too much “you go girl” like Lurker and LJB alluded to? Probably a little. Though I don’t think that problem is as bad as some people think. 
 

Also, if she was really that out of it mentally.. her performing like **** would’ve probably cost Team USA anyway so it was a better team decision to step out

first, sympathy for her feeling like she had to withdraw when the entire planet was watching...

second, disgust at all the jackasses taking such hard line stances on both sides...
