The Decision, Gable Edition

After a few minutes of looking at Twitter, here is some information that may shed light as to what Steveson's camp might be thinking (assuming they have any definite ideas at all, which they may not yet have):

  • Reports are that Gable has already had "discussions" with WWE, the UFC, and some NFL teams.
  • Apparently, Gable will do some MMA training with Jon Jones.  No details on when.
  • Apparently, Cormier thinks Gable should go to the WWE first and earn a bunch of fans, and then start fighting in the UFC later, where he would be at the top of cards immediately, and get PPV money.  In Cormier's own words, Gable should take the "Brock Lesnar approach."

If Gable wants an automatic placement on the world team this October, he has to say so by Sunday, August 15 -- three days away. So, presumably, we should know by Sunday whether he intends to go to Oslo.

There's not a lot of wrestling news to discuss right now, so I suppose this Gable speculation will have to do.

I sure hope he decides to go to Oslo - he could pick up a World Gold Medal to go with his Olympic Gold and $50 K along with it.  There is a good chance that Taha and Geno won't be there and if they are Gable will probably beat them again.

He's a great athlete but I have a lot of trouble believing that he has much of a shot in the NFL since he has no football experience and might be the shortest lineman (offense or defense) in the entire league.

I think the MMA route is likely to be more successful, assuming he can adjust and pick up the fighting skills.

Or, and here's a crazy idea, stick with wrestling through 2024. Get a good agent, do some endorsements, and make a bunch of money on camps and clinics. He's only 21. He shouldn't be in a hurry to give up the one thing he's best at.

He has a manager — an MMA manager.  (According to Twitter, Eierman just signed with that manager as well.)

Additionally, this is what Scott Coker (President of Bellator) had to say recently: “‘I can tell you this, that we’ve already been in touch with his management,’ Coker said. ‘I do know that he has a couple years left of school and wants to go back and wrestle.’”

Unless Gable wants to be a folkstyle wrestling coach some day, I personally don’t see why he would go back to college.  Given the amount of income he could be giving up by delaying his MMA career or WWE career to finish college, it would simply amount to an enormously expensive vacation. If MMA or WWE is in his future, his time would be better spent pursuing those avenues, even if he ends up doing so while he’s not training in freestyle.

Of course, as I said before, i think it would be worth talking to a CTE specialist before making any major decisions.

I'd be shocked if Steveson was six foot 1, don't think that's right but admittedly just a guess based on him always being noticeably shorter than his opponents.

On the college board it seems like guys are saying Boo Dryden is 6’1 or 6’2.  I’m pretty sure there was a video of the two of them doing a dance and I thought they were just about the same size

Eggum seems to be taking the right approach on this. Letting the young man lead the way by giving him guidance. Said in his interview that Gable only has a short time to wrestle and once you step out that door it’s hard to come back. WWE will be there whenever he’s done. I’m hoping he at least wrestles through one more Olympics. Sure the WWE will bring him money and some fame but it’s shallow as a puddle. He could literally become the best USA wrestler of all time.  That’s about as deep as it gets. Legend status.

Would one more Olympic Gold really make him the best USA wrestler of all time?

Earlier someone called him “far and away the biggest name in collegiate wrestling,” but is that even true?  I think Spencer Lee would still challenge for that title despite Gable’s Gold medal.

Well he’d have to win all the worlds and the Olympics and maybe one after to match Smith. But he also has those 2 cadet world titles and a junior world title. His only hiccup is not winning that second junior world tile and obviously the Cassar matches. If he wins through the next Olympics he’s def in the conversation.

John Smith lost to Dan Foldesy … that loss doesn’t seem to haunt him in the discussion about all-time greats. Gable’s only two college losses are to an NCAA champion … that isn’t a hiccup in the grand scheme of things.

There is also very little in the way of actual knowledge regarding the business of the WWE in this thread.

Jason....I thought Gable was 181-1/117-1 of it in college) with the loss to Owings in 1970....who else did he lose to????  He even won Midlands his freshman year, unattached and was 17-0 that year.  He even beat Behm and Hatta in 1966 to win Midlands.

He’s referring to Gable ***Steveson***.

A CTE specialist?  Is that a license that states are giving now?

Hatta revenged his loss to Gable in 1967 ( in freestyle) at the AAU Nationals in Lincoln, Nebraska.
