Greco Worlds Thread ;)

Recommended Posts

Man how do we turn this around? Back in 2010/2011 freestyle was in a similar state what changed?
I cant even begin to speculate.

I just wrote a longer posts explaining the clear reasons freestyle has improved.
But it didnt explain the state of Greco at all.

I just don't know how we can remain as bad as we are with all the resources.
It's not that we don't win medals for me, it's just that there hasn't been anyone on the team in awhile where you'd be genuinely surprised to see they got teched. There's no way we should be that uncompetitive

Limited opportunities and Folk.  Doesn't matter if one hundred percent of the budget went to greco, you can't make up for all the resources  that Folk funnels to Freestyle. There are 244 thousand men in High schools across America practicing FS sisters style and then 2 and half thousand men continue to practice it at a high level D1 into their 20s. What does Greco offer. A niche circle of youth travel people? Then a tiny amount of places that practice it and the chance to make a 10 man team?

That sounds hopeless but the US can still rebound in Greco. There is no big bad Dagestan-Ossetia in Greco. Just the sheer number of people in US wrestling and the growth of academy systems makes me think it will be inevitable that the US gets to at least a Georgia level  even if they continue to be second choicers and later in life.

I am and I always will be of the mindset "Having Folk as the primary style for 22 years of a human's life will always keep us from creating a decent greco squad".
But like I said in my post. I don't expect us to be winning medals but I wish we could compete.
You know there's always those po-dunk universities where you say, "Those kids aren't skilled enough to win anything but all their kids compete at a high level"
I just wish we could make it a match, but I reckon even with folkstyle being similar to freestyle we see many of our "Top guys" struggle vs non-top guys from other countries.
So bridging the gap from Folkstyle to Greco (We only pay attention to our results vs other countries top guys)  is basically a ridiculous ask.

Sigh

The US is almost universally mediocre or worse in sports that are not offered as a common HS sport and give a chance at a collegiate scholarship. Greco and Judo are the sports that I follow closely and the US non-competitive, lack of numbers and competition also means lack of good coaches.  The best athletes will want to compete for their HS and gain the recognition and have the comradeship that club sports don't offer.

Northern Michigan was a half answer to this (Do they still have a Greco program offering scholarships?)The military WCAP program comes too late in the development cycle and there just aren't enough numbers.

Message to Future Posters in this thread,
Before it gets out of control, nobody is saying "Do away with Folkstyle wrestling, I hate America and everything American"
It's simply why Greco doesn't develop.
Sincerely,

I said this in a longer post earlier but I think that Greco will always suffer even if the academy’s improve it because it simply won’t be available to average kids and you won’t get late bloomers or non academy kids like a Burroughs or Kolin Moore. It’s also not helped by the fact that I know plenty of coaches who may not be “high level” but can teach solid basic fundamentals in folk/free. I know “maybe” 3/4 Greco

All that is really happening right now is specialists from other countries are beating late comers and jack of all traders, which is completely expected. Add to that, US greco people are not the creme de la creme of wrestling talent.

3 years so not the longest but not great. Greco basically held serve for what it dies every 1-2 years. Bleh overall. 1 medal.

Im more worried about long term with WCAP getting cut the trickle down effects

Wasn’t Andy “the stach” Bisek the last one about 5 years ago.  And also a Bronze.

Coon In 2018. Silver. Obviously he got a good draw but multiple athletes have gotten good draws they didn’t take advantage of

Coon's draw wasn't  just good. It was legendarily good. He somehow avoided Riza, Oscar, Heiki, and then got absolutely destroyed in the final.  The most accomplished  person he beat was Kim whose career highlight is that same tournament.

Hopefully this Bronze medal performance will help Hancock’s confidence going forward in World level events.

Also maybe the other top Greco guys in the U.S. are saying to themselves, “ If G’Angelo can do it, so can I.”

Pretty unfortunate that our best Greco prospect (Amos) is the same weight as our best wrestler Hancock

Amos? He is going the top Div 1 - Freestyle root isn't he? Does he train greco that much?  I type him as one of these Folk studs who double enters greco because I'm so good why not take the opportunity I'll just win thanks to natural ability.

I saw him wrestle that Russian Greco prospect Mileshin at Juniors. Amos looked out of his depth skill wise, a very technical and controlled defeat. And Mileshin got beaten badly in the final against a guy who was not a full grown 97 in the finals.

He’s always wrestled Greco and he’s not making any teams at 92 or 97 in freestyle anytime soon
