UWW asks Dan Sweeney to stop tweeting out clips of their matches

Recommended Posts

There's definitely value in archives, including short highlights the length of which Dan is using for his breakdowns.

I still thing a solution can be found where a guy like Dan can use the clips and not pay out of pocket but include tags or links or something, but big media companies charge big bucks for use of their highlights. ESPN, BTN, NBC, et al, charge lots of money to use even a few seconds of video.

That would be a good point, except for the small detail that people were able to figure out the sport prior to the advent of UWW, let alone these clips.
Not even sure what we’re arguing here. We get it, you don’t like their decision.

Wrestling almost got removed from the Olympics because its so unpopular. You're totally right though. UWW is right to throw its weight around.

We get it. This is an option for UWW. Is there anything else you wanted to add or just state the obvious?

I guess the only thing I would add is the acknowledgment that the restructuring and reorganization from Fila to UWW is a large factor in why international wrestling has gone from being on the chopping block to the product it is today. So yeah, good on them!!  Keep it going!

You’re not very good at this. Enjoy the new year. Relax and have some champagne.

Do you think UWW has helped increase the visibility of wrestling? Thats what we are talking about here, isnt it? If I go out and ask people in town their thoughts on wrestling, 99% wouldnt know a single thing and I live in Iowa.

Wrestling may be more palatable for you since UWW took over, but most people still dont have a clue whats going on. Get off the forum every now and then and get a clue. People dont give a **** about wrestling and we still need all the publicity we can get.

PS. If you could rely on the merits of your arguement, you wouldnt need to say **** like this: "You’re not very good at this. Enjoy the new year. Relax and have some champagne."

The UWW doesn't have the power to grow wrestling. They are  figureheads responsible for putting together Worlds and being a bureaucratic tool for wrestling to stay in the Olympics.

You can count on one hand the countries where wrestling is a major sport.

Same thing is true in  Russia, Continental Europe, Japan,  and Eastern Asia. They produce medals but the most of the population don't know anything about it.

Do I think UWW has helped increase the visibility of wrestling, Yes.  If you’ve been paying attention it’s pretty hard to argue otherwise.

Now like I said relax and enjoy the new year. There’s plenty of good technique content out there. UWW puts out a lot on their own. It’s okay I promise, you’re going to be okay.

Enough that their actions should be beyond question? Because thats what you are hounding me about. Why are you defending UWW so hard here? They have zero to gain by restricting Dan Sweeny.

Im fine. I can have a discusion about things without getting emotionally involved. Try to do the same instead of turning every post into an insult. Sad if you are a grown ass adult.

And please, show me this technique content UWW has been putting out. I have not seen anything.

Ok, but thats the whole discussion. Being proactive is shortsighted. Your whole point about a slippery slope ignores that.

Problem is that if one does not enforce Copyright they can lose it.

We all see the warnings on movies and videos about Copyright infringement, inluding monetary penalties.

I have gone after some who thought it was OK to use my work - and won. If they had asked the licensing fees would have been much less than what they had to pay. Do it right or face the real possibility of legal action - including your internet site being shut down.

Precisely what I was getting at with my first message on this topic

I think you need to revisit the evolution of our little chat here. I think you also need to realize that seeing someone is visibly upset and suggesting they relax and enjoy the new year is not at all an insult. But I’m sorry if that hurt your feelings. You’ll be okay. Enjoy the day!!

Which, I understand, but Dan stated he was told to shut this down and when he reached out he has heard nothing. I am not saying he needs to just be a free pass, but it seems like he is willing to play ball. UWW cant even bother to get back to him.

Just because someone disagrees with you, doesnt mean they are upset no matter how many times you repeat it. Believe it or not @Lurker, this is me relaxing.

I picture a lawyer advising UWW that they need to be consistent.  Treat those using their content, with no permission or attribution, consistently.  It makes it much easier to protect their property over the long term.  Reduces likelihood of others doing it and reduces legal costs over time.

Agree.  Just like lawyers likely advised Flo to enforce their noncompete clause. This type of advice often more reflects the lawyers justifying their presence than a decision that is in the long term best interests of the organization (In the case of Flo, it obviously was not). In reality, somebody posting technique videos from UWW matches is only furthering interest in the sport (and thereby increasing the value of the content UWW creates). Nobody is tuning out of UWW matches because there is a double leg technique video on youtube.  Just because you legally can do something, and it is in the best interests of some currently working for the organization (such as lawyers or individuals who want to go on a power trip), doesn't mean that you should or that it is in the best interest of the organization as a whole.

@Billyhoyle  - I’ve been on the business side of this kind of situation.  Not exactly the same.  But similar.  It was frankly a hassle to find and notify the person and it wasn’t a big deal - heck - it would likely send traffic to us.

The lawyers made a good point about saying there is a process for this and to avoid ‘hey, you let X do it, they didn’t need to follow the process either!  There is no process as a result!  And …  You are discriminating against me!’

in other words, while this person might not suck, there are many others that do and you need to do things that protect your org.  Thus you need make sure others follow the process to take advantage our IP.  Be consistent.

Now, the fact that UWW ignored the attempts this person made to at least understand the process and try to work within it …. is wrong (from what I have read here).

Even if you happen to be right here, it seems like there’s a lot of bro law in this thread.

At any rate, the NBA has lawyers, and they appear to have taken a different path.

You're thinking of trademarks.

Nope. If one lets copyright infringement go unchallenged they can lose the right to enforce it.
