Former Iowa/Oregon State coach going to Ukraine?

At lunch heard two wrestling fans talking about former Iowa  and Oregon State head Coach Jim Zalesky.

Discussion and guessing was whether he is Ukrainian and heading there to help fight the Russians.

Anyone know? These guys were clueless but the discussion was funny/sad.

According to ancestry. Com, the name is Ukrainian, Belorussian and/or Jewish.  I was surprised to learn that many ex US service members are equipping themselves and heading to Ukraine.

Also A Polish name as many people from Poland have names ending with Sky or Ski,  Poland borders Poland so that may explain why  names ending in Sky or Ski are often Polish or Ukrainian

Isn't Jim a bit long in the tooth to be out fighting a war?  Unless he has some amount of military experience, I don't think he would be an asset to the Ukrainians.  In my opinion, he would do better to send money to aid the fight or refugees.  I guess it depends on what kind of shape he has kept himself in.  But this would be really interesting news if true.

Very great shape. Has stayed fit and worked out consistently for years. I don’t know if he’s been militarily trained but I think he’s got very good conditioning and mental toughness if that counts.
