Making the most of your AA's

Recommended Posts

I started looking at the number of AA's for each team in my data set (2009 - 2022). I was surprised to see that while PSU has won 9 of those 13 team championships, they have just a 6 wrestler advantage over Iowa when it comes to AA's. It doesn't seem like 6 extra AA's over 13 years should translate to that kind of team title dominance.

So the obvious next step was to see where those AA's were in the top 8 First with pretty colors:

That is a whole lotta 1's in the PSU block. Now with percentages of each place:

So even though PSU has a few more AA's, when they AA it tends to be at the high end of the range (59.52% first or second). Meanwhile, the next closest 1, 2 combo is Iowa at 26.17%.

No surprise in any of this. I just like to know the details.

What I think is also interesting is when you compare 3 v 4, 5 v 6, 7 v 8.  It's absolutely astounding to me how good PSU is at pushing hard in those matches to win.  I'm not looking at this wrong, am I?

Good catch. I didn't see that, but yes, PSU gets that last point much more often than not.

Most of the years in your study PSU scored tons of bonus points with guys like Nickal, Taylor, Ruth, Nolf, Retherford, etc. That would explain the spread over Iowa despite having only 6 more AAs.
