Greatest freestyle middleweights

Recommended Posts

Isn't it interesting that while most successful middleweight wrestlers in freestyle are quite physical specimens the greatest of them that had long term success looked like computer nerds if you saw them on the street? I am talking about B. Saitiev, Fadzaev and John Smith.

They all had exceptional techniques though so it seems the best way to be a long term middleweight star in wrestling is still to possess great technique rather than superior muscles and/or conditioning.

Fadzaev did not look like a computer nerd. He wasn't exactly jacked like Jordan Burroughs, but he was very clearly an athlete.

Technique is obviously important, but I also think that having a style that is economical and not overly reliant on freakish physical attributes is important. Wrestlers who are exceptionally quick or exceptionally powerful or have exceptionally high levels of conditioning lose their edge with age. Strength is the last of the physical attributes to go with age, while speed/quickness and power are among the first. Wrestlers whose edge is more technical or stylistic in nature retain that edge better over time.

I think what wrestlingnerd said is true. Which suggests that basing "greatest of all time" on number of titles is misleading -- because it assumes that all titles are equal, and does not take into account the level of excellence at a wrestler's peak. A wrestler who won only one or two titles might have been more impressive at their peak than "the all time greats."

Fadzaev look like a computer nerd.....you're nuts....watch some of his battles and the sublties that went on (the in fighting with Metzger), or the time he dislocated a guys elbow, and decided he was going to try and put it back in place himself.....Arsen Fadzaev 8 time world and Olympic Champion

Gable had a short reign, but would have competed well against Fadzaev in a 9 minuter.

He didn't exactly look like a body builder.

Nor did David Schultz, or Kenny Monday for that matter.

On the other end of the spectrum, jacked wrestlers like Kemp, Jackson, Mark Schultz had great international careers.

Fadzaev is a great example of a technician, but a terrible example if you're trying to name a guy who didn't use strength. Saitiev fits that bill better. But Fadzaev was freakishly strong at his weight, and was almost strong enough to win at 163 but got out-horsed by Kenny Monday. The reason his single leg series that he could finish with lifts and dumps worked so well was that once he latched onto a leg, even with just one hand, that was all he needed. It was amazing how he almost never got out of position while finishing a shot. Saitiev on the other hand, frequently got out of position during shots, but was so flexible and had great grip strength, that he could finish anyway.
