University worlds

Recommended Posts

Fortune pulled back into the wrestlebacks as the Ukrainian dismantled his opponent to advance to the finals.

3 out of 4 Russians in the finals, unbelievable. USA has a long way to go with our University development program. Our college wrestlers will catch up, but in all truthfulness, the US contingency is wrestling in this event to help prepare them to compete at the NCAA level. Whereas the rest of the world in competing in this event to help them compete for World and Olympic gold.

so Ruth is 1 and done?

i too am a bit surprised that he can't get his double going against Int'l competition. He has one of the best doubles out there.

Ruth has never faced competition like this before. Sure he is a 4th place finisher at our World Team Trials, but there is noting quite like competing in a FILA World Championship event, even at the University level. Also second only to Russia, Iran has some of the best wrestlers in the World. Ruth will be just fine, but it is going to take some time for his talents translate into winning on an international world stage in freestyle wrestling.

Not sure US Has a long way to go. We basically sent university aged relative rookies and Russia and others sent their nations top dogs with more experience and age. The host country loaded up for this one.

The 1 and done rule is STUPID. We should have standard repcharge. Hopefully Stan will read this as he jet sets to Chili for the rules meeting. Stan and crew may not be able to work complete consi brackets into Olympic Games but I don't understand a real reason that we could not add weights and full repcharge in non Olympic years and award ONE bronze medal. Again, it just seems that our governing body does not like watching the sport that they govern, they just want it to end as soon as possible so they can get back to the hotel party, drink in hand, all sitting around bashing Wade.

Duck, not sure what you are trying to say. This experience will definitely help improve at NCAA's but the point is really to develop our university age guys for future international competition. We are the only country that wrestles folk so the event is not designed to help US wrestlers get better in folk but the experience and training will translate to better folk.

+1 it's all Wade's fault. ha

If the event is called University Worlds then you would think the wrestlers should be enrolled at a University but it appears the age limit of 28 (?) is the only requirement. Sure it would be great for the US to win lots of medals but we also need to develop and promote our future competitors. Not sure how valuable the experience is for Ruth, flying all the way to Russia for 1 match though.

Tyrell Fortune wins the Bronze. 7-0 tech. Fortune went 4-1, scores were as follows: 8-0, 8-0, 5-7, 7-0, 7-0. No doubt about it, Tyrell Fortune has clearly distinguished himself above all the current college heavies.

Grand Canyon University switches to D-1 next year, but won't be allowed to compete at the NCAA's due to it being their transitional year. A lot of top heavies at the NCAA's will be breathing a huge sigh of relief, knowing that Fortune (who will be able to compete in the regular college season - just not post season comp) won't be competing against them. Fortune, who twice defeated 2x NCAA Champion Tony Nelson at the University Nationals, where he was a two style champ, is a 2x NJCAA Champ, 1x NCAA D-2 Champ, and has won multiple University and Junior FILA, and Cadet and Junior national titles already. Clearly the best heavyweight in the nation in the college ranks, and now #2 on the senior level only behind Olympian and 3x World team member Tervel Dglanev, after winning the World Team Trials Challenge Tourney.

Also Interesting enough Tyrell Fortune is scheduled to wrestle in the Greco Roman division at University Worlds this week. Hopefully he will able to get a few days rest.

Is there a special rule allowing move up schools to operate under lower division rules? If they are now D1, even though not eligible for post season, are they not governed by the D1 5 to play 4 rule? If not, they aren't D1.

I'd love to see Tyrell compete, but unless he transfers I think he's just training and working on school next year.

Go get'em in GR!

Fortune will not be competing in any NCAA championships for GCU in 2014- he needs to transfer if he wants to compete for a title.

One of the sad rules that the NCAA imposes when a school decides to move up in class.

Hopefully he has his schoolwork in order so a transfer is possible.

As has been mentioned multiple times this summer in reference to Tyrell, his D1 clock is apparently up anyway. So even if they were D1 eligible this year, he couldn't compete in the post season anyway.

He isn't D1 eligible regular season either. It's the school that isn't post season eligible. D1 clock has run out. He would be D3 or NAIA eligible but a poster from his school (I believe) has said he is staying for class work and training. Trying to win a D3 or NAIA title not really where his focus is now.

Trollster: ppfffttttt!
