Have a World Tournament Every Year

Recommended Posts

The cutting down wrestling to 6 weight classes is going to hurt too many "tweeners". I think FILA should decide to hold a world championship every year with 10 weight classes. Only at the Olympics would there be 6 weight classes.

I know that there would need to be qualifying tournaments for the Olympics at 6 weight classes.

If it weren't workable to hold a world championship with 10 weight classes the year of the Olympics, then din't hold it. At least this way 75% of the time wrestling would determine the number of weight classes not the IOC. Perhaps when there are 10 weight classes we'll see more excitement with more countries medaling.

You can't have a world championship event the same year as the Olympics...It would partially undermine the event and we need to focus everything into making Olympic Wrestling as marketable as possible.

With that said, expanding weight classes during non olympic years is a good idea, and it's looking like FILA agrees with you. If you check out a thread below in this section, they seem to be working through 2 or 3 additional weight classes in these "off years".

Cycling holds world championships the same calendar year as the Olympics. And it's still considered more prestigious than the Olympics.

Wrestling should run a world championship tournament for the non-Olympic weight classes at a not too far away location, close to the Olympics. As wrestling improves its footing, maybe the weights can be added.

Cycling also has several Olympics events they keep changing every time to try and find a way to spread out their medal count between countries and/or get more viewership.

FILA already wants to head in that direction. Gold, Silver and two Bronze medals over 18 weights in 3 styles and limited repechage to even out the medal count between powerhouses and emerging programs. What's your point?

I think his point is that an Olympic medal does not have much prestige in the cycling world. Kind of like tennis.

An Olympic medal has a ton of prestige in the wrestling world. Probably will have even more now if we go to the 9 in non-olympic years, 6 in the Olympics. Truly a measure of greatness. This seems to me to be a not bad alternative to having all the weights we want in the Olympics.

Also, I've got to think that participation in a World Championships during an Olympic year has got to be watered down severely. Guys already take off in the year following the Olympics. Plus, a lot of guys will have moved to the Olympic weight for their shot at gold that year and the non-Olympic weights will be VERY watered down.

Sure you can. Piss on the Olympics and their myopic view of wrestling. While you are at it allow each country that can qualify two wresters in each weight to enter two in the tournament. Why not? Many countries have more than one excellent wrestler in some of their weight classes.
