Picking US team

Recommended Posts

If you want unneeded controversy, and impropriety, pick the team… Wrestling is the sport where you earn your spot by beating the other guys. You can also adjust the process. Have they typical bracketed tournament for all those that qualify, or give World Medalists from previous World Championship that also won the most recent U.S. open the bye to the finals…. That may appease both sides. Guys that earned it by showing they can win at then international level and maintain their position as the top guy in the U.S. I have no problem with World Medalists and U.S> Senior Champion getting the bye. If you don't like it, make the World team and place at the wWorlds, or beat the World medalists at the U.S. Open where they don't get the bye to the finals...

If you were picking a team instead of having trials, Foster over Gavin would have been a no brainer last year based on International results. Then at a tournament yesterday Foster loses to Canada and goes 0-1.

You are always going to be able to look with 20-20 hindsight and cherry pick what you think is a better team. But the problem is you never know. Then what happens when you coaches' decision a guy off the team and the replacement goes 0-1? Not to mention I think many guys would just retire if they thought Zeke Jones had a personal favorite at a weight they could not supplant. That would hit our depth.

Right now we protect our world/olympic medalists from getting bounced by a guy who just trains to beat them. What we are really talking about is which non-medalist should go over which non-medalist. In that case I think it is smart to give the benefit of the doubt to the guy who got his hand raised.
