quaker118 12 Report post Posted November 23, 2013 Penn beats Maryland 19-13 when Frank Mattiace a true freshman from Blair majors Christian Boley the 8th ranked 197 lber in his first varsity match. Congrats to my Penn Quakers.
wrestlingnerd 3,000 Report post Posted November 23, 2013 Nice win for your boys, congrats. Is Maryland's Billy Rappo related to Penn's Mark Rappo who graduated last year? Your heavy taking the 7th ranked Myers to overtime is notable too, although it was a loss.

LemonPie 1,368 Report post Posted November 23, 2013 McCoy has not impressed. I guess the move to the Big Ten is helping recruiting but they should be better than they are.

Congrats to my Penn Quakers. Wow. That is a great result for Mattiace. "Major decision" does Mattiace's performance no justice. First two takedowns were pretty straightforward single legs. The third takedown was sheer ridiculousness - Boley had Mattiace on his butt, when Mattiace just horsed Boley over with what can be best described as a no-legged Merkle. Once on top, Mattiace calmly sunk a half and nearly pinned Boley. The kid has Donkey Kong like strength. We alums were just beside ourselves. Nice win. Would live to see all of the guys finish their matches more strongly, but it's early in the season. On to Keystone tomorrow. If you're coming to the Palestra, stop by the head table and say hello. SetonHallPirate 988 Report post Posted November 23, 2013 Is CJ Cobb injured? Will he be at Keystone. Thanks and an excellent win for Penn I don't know...didn't think to ask during the dual last night. So far this year, though, he's wrestled as many matches as I have. SalvatoreG 2 Report post Posted November 23, 2013 Actually the move to the big 10 hasn't helped recruiting enough. McCoy is a good coach but needs to bring in more top talent. Boley starts off matches slow but usually storms back to win. Mattiace made him pay for it. Nice win for upenn. They have some nice talent on that team
Voice_of_the_Quakers 130 Report post Posted November 23, 2013 The move to the B1G was announced almost a year ago to the day - hard to imagine how the Terps would have possibly benefitted this year. That being said, Llopez is a stud and a great get for Kerry for next year.

That being said, Llopez is a stud and a great get for Kerry for next year. The terps signed Alfred Bannister too, though they missed out on the other local phenom, Kyle Snyder. What remains to be seen is whether they can begin to pull more out-of-state blue chip recruits.

quaker118 12 Report post Posted November 23, 2013 I believe Cobb is dinged up, will find out more tomorrow whether he wrestles or not. He did wrestle Canfora in the wrestleoffs 2 weeks ago, and he toyed with him. Penn has 2 nice problems, both involving the Bethea brothers. Canaan started at 184 last year and is behind Thomas right now. Coaches would like to see Thomas down to 174, don't think he has a mind to make the cut. Robertson beat younger Bethea in wrestleoff, but in Stroudsburg Robertson lost in semi's, and Bethea won the tournament. Was curious to see who they would put on the mat. If Penn can get everyone in the right weight we would be a good dual meet team.

That being said, Llopez is a stud and a great get for Kerry for next year. And won't officially be in until the '14-'15 season. Perhaps waiting three or four years after actually competing in the B1G would allow for a better evaluation of the move on wrestling. The new media contract will perhaps have been finished by then, and a fair amount more money will soon follow.

I think I can picture this. I'm guessing Boley was coming in or leaning into Frank and Mattiace used Boley's momentum or force against him combined with leverage from the mat? Would have loved to have seen this.
