College opens as a post grad?

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine was a very talented high school wrestler. He won a state championship, was undefeated his last year actually and was named OW at state. He's kept in good shape, never wrestled in college but gets on the mat every so often and is still a freakish athlete. How would he go about competing in a college open like Midlands or something else? He graduated from college already, so trying to go back and wrestle NAIA or D2 isn't in the works. If there isn't any opens like that he's probably just going to go to the US Open in Vegas. But he'd like to try folkstyle now since he never wrestled freestyle/greco at all.

The mat.com lists senior level tournaments

trackwrestling lists all open tournaments and you can see past tournaments to see approx time and date

for this season

MAWA wrestling is an open qualifier tournament ending with a eastern national tournament

OTOC and Gene Mills eastern nationals are open.

I beleive California has a series of open competitions as well.

just make sure you are in wrestling shape. these competitions are competitive.

I saw the punk asses in my age and weight class last year at folkstyle nationals this past season, and I'm even thinking about entering that next year and showing them a thing of two. Most were out of gas in one minute, which I, at least, have decent cardio.

The good news is that I know that I can get up on the podium, as there were only 4 or 5 guys in that bracket. 8-)

If he is not working out regularly he had better stay away from a tournament like Midlands but if working out hard he could try and petition in if good enough may be a story for them to promote.

Maybe he'd just be content with being able to wrestle in the tournament, regardless of results.

There's the one guy who wrestles it every year who is in his 40's, and pretty much goes 0-2 every year, but just likes to compete. There was also the guy last year who was in his 50's and was shelled in two straight matches.

I suspect that both of them just wanted to try to compete in such a prestigious tournament. I'm waiting until I turn 60 to enter it. 8-)

Hilarious! I haven't wrestled since nationals my freshman year. I'm in the best shape of my past 20 years but I suspect one period I'd be a sack of bones and pulled muscles.

Strange you say that, as I'm not sure that I heard more sudden yelps of, "ah!" and "ouch!" than I did that weekend, all coming from the 35+ age group, with nearly all of them getting up and grabbing at their backs!
