Oliver probably didn't weigh more than 92 or so as a freshman. He was underweight by a lot more than just a couple of pounds. And Kyler was a really big 103.

That list of 103's makes a pretty good argument that maybe people should think twice before pushing the lowest weight up too high.

Wow! Two teams tied for the state championship and the 3rd place team (where JO wrestled) was only one point back. I wonder if that's ever occurred before or since (in PA or anywhere else)

Connellsville 68

Council Rock South 68

Easton 67

I also noted that Tyler Nauman pinned Steve Bosak in the first round of the 112-pound bracket. Nauman lost his next match, then one four straight in the wrestle-backs to finish 3rd. Bosak went 1-1 in the wrestle-backs and DNP. Last year, Nauman finished 5th at 149 and Bosak edged defending champ Q. Wright in OT to win an NCAA title at 184.

Not exactly relevant to the topic discussion but I thought it was interesting seeing some current All-Americans names in there and how they performed:

-103: Already covered in an earlier post.

- Nauman: Already mentioned but impressive run at 3rd at 112.

- Matt Moley (2x AA at Bloomsburg): 4th at 119

- Steve Fittery (AA at American): 5th at 119

- Quentin Wright (1x Champ. 2x Finalist at Penn State): 1-2 at 125 his Freshman year (Interesting Ha)

- Alex Krom (AA at Maryland): 4th at 135

-Zack Kemmerer (AA at Penn): 5th at 135 as a sophomore(?)

- Joey Eckloff (AA at Pitt? May have been his brother): 1st at 152

There are many others in there who have qualified, had Round of 12 performances, AA'd on the DII or DIII level, etc.

Just thought it was kind of interesting.

I need a Pa guy to refresh my memory. Wasn't that the year Josh Oliver lost his first round match, threw his headgear and his team penalty point cost them the state title. I was there that year and saw him do it, remember thinking it might come back and cost the team. Hope I have the right year.

Jeff was a true freshman All-American at Oklahoma and then transferred to Pitt, and never wrestled an official match; I heard that a neck injury basically ended Joey's career.

What is wrong with 3X? Jordan Oliver was a 3 time state champ in high school.

Another interesting note about a wrestler in the 103 bracket that year is that Shane Smith actually pinned Quentin Wright in college....

Oliver was a beast in high school regardless and won some of the hardest state tournaments in the nation. I used to love watching his matches against Sheetz those were epic matches. It's a shame Sheetz only went D3. The weights he won were much tougher than 99% of all state high school tournaments in my opinion. Pennsylvania really does produce some animals. I wrestled with 2 kids from easton in college that wrestled around the same time as Oliver and his older brother, man those kids got some heel picks.
