IRTYTKY 67 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 Brian Murphy from Michigan is having a pretty good year

BigApple 86 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 Right now it is Adam Coon hands down.
Bucksman 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 Yep. It's Coon for the c/o 2013s. The Cornell kids, while technically true freshmen on their clocks, are all 2012s.

TBar1977 4,532 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 as much as i wish they were palacio and realbuto are not true freshmen, they graduated high school in 2012 I thought that was the case, but they are listed as Fr on NWCA.
TBar1977 4,532 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 So what is the board consensus on the top 5? I have: 1. Coon 2. Retherford 3. J'Den Cox 4. Bo Jordan 5. ???
Bucksman 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 I wouldn't count Bo Jordan at the moment b/c he's redshirting as things currently stand. Among c/o 2013s, it has to go (1) Coon (2) Z-Reth (3) Cox ... then I would guess Murphy of Michigan.
cbg 27 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 as much as i wish they were palacio and realbuto are not true freshmen, they graduated high school in 2012 If a student/athlete never enrolled in college they are considered a "TRUE FRESHMEN" What would you consider someone that joined the military right out of high school and ten years later decided to attend college? I think you are abusing that analogy when comparing it to Ivy league enrollment. They used the "Greyshirt" avenue which is the equivalent to a Redshirt. THey deferred enrollment a year, wrestled with the wrestling "Club" affiliated with Cornell and normally they attend a sister college to get some prep courses in prior to the next year. If you want to call them "True" freshman feel free, but it is a HUGE stretch to do so.......
Old_Marine_Wrestler 245 Report post Posted December 12, 2013 Jim Wilson Wilson (Stanford) is a RS Freshman. He graduated HS in 2012.
NJDan 1,073 Report post Posted December 12, 2013 Rob Koll kind of invented the greyshirt. It was discussed on another thread whether he is best college coach. Is his use of the greyshirt a point in his favor, or is this underhanded and a negative point?
gimpeltf 2,069 Report post Posted December 12, 2013 Rob Koll kind of invented the greyshirt. It was discussed on another thread whether he is best college coach. Is his use of the greyshirt a point in his favor, or is this underhanded and a negative point? I wouldn't say he invented it but he sure figured out how to get the most out of it. Blair Academy in the 70s/80s did it a lot with their PGs before turning into a HS power. There were others but not so much concentrated to one college. I think Okla St did it a few times in the 60s with their Japanese imports (Where are you Boomer). Mike and Mark Grey didn't invent it either (both before HS and College) but they get the honors here. Is his use of the greyshirt a point in his favor, or is this underhanded and a negative point? He did not invent it. Various Ivy Leaguers employed it before Koll institutionalized it. Koll's big contribution is the creation of a wrestling club that rivals some of the country's top university-affiliated clubs (Nittany Lion WC, Hawkeye WC, etc.) where the greyshirts can actually get a legit "redshirt" type of experience. There is nothing underhanded about it. It is completely within NCAA and Ivy League rules to do it. It is of course a significant advantage over other Ivy League schools that don't have the same setup. But it is still not as good as a legit redshirt at a non-Ivy. There's nothing like practicing with the actual team under the tutelage of the actual coaching staff you'll wrestle for while going to the actual school where you'll graduate from. The greyshirt approximation of that experience is just that, an approximation, but not as good.

It has also been noted on the WR thread that Harvard wrestler Patrick Hogan is taking this year off, and has been wrestling out of FLWC.

There are some outstanding true freshman this year like every year, but Zain's win over Stieber sets the high water mark by a MILE.
