The new FILA!

Recommended Posts

here's the breakdown of the weight classes, non-olympic and olympic years, in lbs/kgs/% increase.

125.7/57

134.5/61/7.02%

143.3/65/6.56%

154.3/70/7.69%

163.1/74/5.71%

189.6/86/16.22%

213.8/97/12.79%

275.6/125/28.87%

125.7/57

143.3/65/14.29%

163.1/74/13.85%

189.6/86/16.22%

213.8/97/12.79%

275.6/125/28.87%

given the limitations being imposed, this looks pretty good, except i probably would prefer to see 1 or 2 more non-olympic weights. an 80kg class would be nice.

most of the scoring changes look like improvements too.

EDIT: calculated my percentages wrong. fixed it. now the jump from 74 to 86 looks even worse. there's no reason the jump from 74 to 86 should be a greater % than the jump from 86 to 97. that is now my main critique of the new weights. don't see reasoning behind it. if anyone knows of one, i'd be interested in hearing it.

I am kind of torn between the non-Olympic weights. What does someone like Reece Humphrey do? Does he compete at 134 in 2015 then try to make the team at 125 or 143 the following year? It takes a decent amount of time to change your body to fit into a weight class. This will be a big decision for the tweeners that get the non-Olympic weights at 134 and 154.

Who drops down to 154 from 163 this upcoming year? Dake? Taylor? Seems like that's too much for Howe.

80kg/176lb would work for Howe! as of now, the 74 to 86 jump is the biggest by % between classes in the history of FILA, not counting the jumps to HWT. seems like they could have narrowed that gap a little, as those tweeners are going to get hurt the most.

on the other hand, theyve been very consistent in favoring the upper weights. wouldn't mind dropping the top weight back to 120 and shade the next two heaviest down some.

still, minor quibbles compared to the nonsense 55,65,75,85,95,125 that was floated way back when.

Seems like a ZERO % chance any of the current top level international and domestic 74kg guys drop to 70kg. This weight is more for the bigger 66kg guys, you will see at lot more of those guys moving to this weight than the 74kg guys.

Dake, Taylor, Howe and Burroughs are all in the mid to upper 170's walking around weight so I don't see any of them dropping down. At the same token there is now no way ANY of those guys move up a weight either as none of them are nearly big enough to wrestle 190. Maybe Taylor has the best chance to bump up to 86kg due to his frame, but it would take a couple years (2016?)

+ 1 past years there were more competitors in 66 and 74 than 84 and 96. what is the reasoning fila?
