Field is set for Gold Midlands!

Recommended Posts

I think that looks like a spectacular tournament without the "top heavy" teams. It will have a ton of "top heavy" individuals and a bunch of solid teams. I'd like to see the official Scuffle teams because they will have their hands full matching that field. PSU and Minne alone won't do it.

I think you missed it Dr look at the field @ the Schuffle!!!!!!!!!!!

The top seven teams alone make the midlands look as if it has lost it's luster to the Schuffle.

Chattanooga is set to welcome 20 teams from across NCAA Division I wrestling, including four of the top five finishers at the 2012 NCAA Championships. Two-time defending NCAA Champion Penn State highlights the list of teams committed to visiting the Scenic City next season. No. 2 Minnesota and No. 4 Cornell will also return from last year's Scuffle lineup.

No. 5 Oklahoma State and No. 19 American highlight the newcomers for the 2013 event. They will be joined by Virginia Tech (11), Appalachian State (21), Missouri (26) and Virginia (28) as teams who finished in the top-30 at last year's NCAA Championships.

"The support we got for the Scuffle in its first year was so big that teams committed that weekend for 2013," stated Eslinger. "We have had a number of other schools want to come which is making the field even stronger."

Penn State won the event last year while the Mocs surprised the field with a seventh place finish. Nearly 5,000 wrestling fans spun the turnstiles at McKenzie Arena during the two days of the 2012 tournament and Eslinger expects that number to continue to grow.

"Word has gotten out in the wrestling community about how good of a host Chattanooga was for the Scuffle," added Eslinger. "You will see bigger crowds for next year's event and we hope to fill the lower bowl each day."

The entire 2012-13 Chattanooga wrestling schedule should be finalized in the coming weeks, as well as season ticket information. On sale dates for the 2013 Southern Scuffle will be announced when available and additional teams may be added to the lineup, so be sure to check back to GoMocs.com.

longarms-I don't neccessarily agree. You are right the Scuffle looks good. Anytime PSU, Minne, Cornell, and OSU enter a tournament together you have something. I'd submit to you that Midlands is a bit deeper tournament, though, as SHP and his 'puter mentioned, it's not as top heavy. I think both look good and I'll be tuned in for both, but I don't think the Scuffle is leaps and bounds better. I think that Midlands field is solid from a team standpoint and an individual standpoint.

Before this thing turns into the normal "crap fight" let me just say I'm pulling for both tournaments to succeed. In a sport with some serious problems (like some others) would it be impossible for both the Midlands and Scuffle to win over some new fans while serving the wrestling needs of those established? Do we have such a shortage of competitors that one can survive only at the expense of another? Hey, I wish we had more tourneys, each with a solid following and an opportunity to promote wrestling. The historic Midlands and the tough new kid on the block (Scuffle) are both important and "winners" in my old dog eared book

No Iowa in either tournament? I see ISU...

And our Beav's are at Midlands ... Wish they would have hit the Scuffle instead.

And I don't see BSU at either ..

Travel is just so fricken' expensive nowadays....

I really like that the Midlands have allowed the redshirt wrestlers to wrestle. I wonder if Howe will wrestle? Also the true freshman such as Tsirtsis and some of the other top recruits.

Besides, if you had ALL the best teams at one in-season tournament, it would water down the end of season individual tournament. We all know Cael hates that. ;)

Another troll post from scribe. Par for the course.

I've said many times I don't like the way Tom does scheduling for Iowa. I hate that they didn't go to the National Duals and I hate that they aren't at the Midlands. I don't get it and I never will. I trust that he has a plan, like Flap says :) , and he knows how to get the guys ready to peak at the right time.

Midlands is celebrating 50 years of tournament wrestling.

Lots of great bouts for the casual , as well as the hard core wrestling fans. Did my HS wrestling in the Chi-town area. So, the Ken Kraft Midlands is a special time for me. Located in the heart of our country--the Midlands has been an easy access for most wrestlers, teams.......and as mentioned.......the fans.

How bout we all support wrestling. Nough said ?

I have been critical of coaches in regards to scheduling and Brands has been one of the coaches getting some blame in the past. With that said, I think the schedule actually shows that he is trying to do what is in the best interest of the sport. Duals are in the best interest of our sport and he is focusing on duals. Additionally, his contract calls for a $50,000 bonus for winning the Midlands. Iowa, in all likelihood would win this year if they attended. However, they are not attending and as a result Brands is leaving money on the table. But they will be in Chattanooga for early season duals where Eslinger has been working to market his program. They will be in Madison Square Garden helping to ensure the Grapple at the Garden is a success. They are traveling to Buffalo for the 'Takedown Cancer' fundraiser dual. They are attending the National Duals.

I have learned that Brands knows how to get his athletes ready for nationals and the recent schedule has shown me that, although I sometimes disagree with him, I have no doubt he is also trying to do what is best for the sport and use his program as an ambassador for out sport.

Pinnum , Shouldn't there be one of these thingy's icon_e_wink.gif At the end of your post??

Seems like there is a disconnect with Upper Management, when they put a bonus in his contract, for a tournament that Coach Brands doesn't participate.

Is there a site that has the 50 year comprehensive Midlands results or most years ?

If not, may be a good project to celebrate the 50 year anniversary. Would love to see video of Jimmy Carr winning tournament ( OW ) as a HS student.
