ESPN Coverage- Who is lying?

Recommended Posts

Rob Koll has stated that ESPN has interest in showing the duals in the hybred format.

Cael Sanderson tweeted saying that ESPN does not have interest in showing them.

seems like someone is lying or atleast bending the facts.

Anyone on here actually been around the conversations and have knowledge of ESPN's interest?

it is understood that cael is not involved with the nwca and keeps a distance which is part of the reason he says he is blindsided by things so it isn't a shock if he isn't on the up and up and the nwca is the coaches representative to the ncaa

but in that same tweeting he said that the big ten network wouldn't give up the rights to the iowa penn state dual to espn so it sounds like there have been talks about getting duals on espn but they only want the big ones

the ncaa does not push any changes without talking to the television networks so if the ncaa wants duals you can bet espn wants duals

ESPN's online channel already shows a fair number of smaller (read: ACC) duals.

ESPN3 shows some ACC duals as part of a wider contract between ESPN and the ACC. Same reason many B1G duals are on the BTN digital network.

As far as claiming ESPN is the devil, that's so crazy. If you don't have ESPN on your side, your presence in sports media is minimized (see the NHL).

Understood by whom? How do you know what contact any coach has with the NWCA. I would suppose that the three time defending champion coach has plenty of contact with the NWCA located not terribly far from his campus.

Looks like there may be more to this debate. Not from the coaches but from the networks. Some of you may know that Fox owns 51% (controlling stake) of the Big Ten Network with the conference owning 49%. It looks like Fox, in their attempt to bolster FoxSports1 is starting to push the conference to pull back on their partnerships with ESPN.

This puts the Big Ten Conference in an odd spot since their money making network (BTN) could actually result in them getting less exposure while Fox pressures for more Big Ten programing to bolster their own network which the Conference doesn't have a stake in. It will be interesting to see how things progress as the Big Ten's deals with ESPN and CBS expire in three years.

That post was in response to the Cael tweet saying that the Big Ten would not release the rights to the Penn State vs Iowa dual to ESPN, not to Cael's position on the debate. I do realize you're not saying that but wanted to point it out.

Lettme get this straight. The big ten network/fox are clamping down on big ten teams being televised by espn?

Surely Carl will be outraged when small market teams can't get tv coverage because of this exclusive club he is part of, no? Someone who has twitter, please update.

Obviously, Cael wants to save those small market teams from being exploited by those media giants! :P

BTN has exclusive rights to all events coming from the conference schools. They do not have the rights to non-conference events on another campus. i.e. Iowa at Oklahoma State would be available to ESPN. There have been a few exceptions, mostly in hockey, but the network is reluctant to give up any event to a competitor... an understandable position. The Big Ten television contract expires in 2016. The rights negotiation will be, to say the least, spirited. The question is whether Fox feels they have an inside track since they already have their foot in the door with BTN. The money that will change hands starting in 2017 will be breath-taking.

That being said, there are a number of upper management folks at ESPN that are wrestling fans. It's to their credit that the NCAA coverage has increased every year.

I thought it was common knowledge that Carl was saving wrestling one dual at a time by going to small, at risk programs and kicking the s**t out of them in front of their fans, AD's, mothers, and girlfriends. Why would you need ESPN or any new proactive approach to saving wrestling when all you have to do is pummel Boston and Utah Valley to save the sport? I mean heck, all you have to do is put a product out there on the mat that is exciting and fun to watch and they will come out in droves. Never mind the fact that only one team in the country has a lineup with 8 top ten, blue chip recruits in it, any coach can make this happen. Forget about National duals, teach a non-stop attacking style and see what happens. If Carl can do it with his all-star team then we know Tenn-Chatt, and South Dakota St. and Campbell and Gardner-Webb can do it. Shoot, Boston U. got a one on one lesson from the master. They should be using that style and selling the place out by now. ESPN and National Duals can go F themselves, this situation is under control!

And we sure as h*** don't need any pansy network types bringing the sport right into folks' living rooms! We need butts in seats on the hardwood bleachers, armchair viewers don't count for nothin'!
