Eight All-Americans

Recommended Posts

Up through the 1962 NCAA tournament, the NCAA recognized the top four place winners as All-Americans. Up through the 1978 NCAA tournament, the NCAA recognized the top six place winners as All-Americans. How did the choice to recognize eight All-Americans per weight in wrestling come to be? Does it hold the sport back in anyway with the NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA? Since 1978, has there been a push to revise the number wrestling All-Americans?

Back around 1978 the late Bob Dellinger suggested that only one more mat would be needed on the floor to decide a 7th and 8th place. The rules committee went for it. Also, it was thought that more opportunity for placement would take in team balance to a greater degree, adding veracity to the final score/finish.
