“ETR WRESTLING” is proud to present the 10th annual Escape the Rock Wrestling Tournament (the 9th as an individual event), which will bring together 39 teams on Saturday & Sunday, January 17 & 18, 2015 at Council Rock South High School in Holland, PA. Some top teams and individuals from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, New York and West Virginia will be looking to take top honors.

The 2014 Escape the Rock Tournament proved to be the best to date. Highlights start with an appearance by Jordan Burroughs, as he presented awards for some weight classes and also took time to pose for pictures, sign autographs and shoot some t-shirts to fans in the stands. He showed why he is not only the best wrestler in the world, but an outstanding young man and a great ambassador of our sport. Thanks to Flips Wrestling for making that happen! The competition was absolutely stellar and featured 23 State/National Prep Champions, 99 state place winners, 125 state qualifiers and 17 national prep tournament place winners! Team post season accolades were also abundant, with nine teams that finished in the top 17 at the 2014 PIAA State Tournaments, including AA state champion (Bethlehem Catholic), the Delaware State Champion (Smyrna) and Runner-up (Caesar Rodney), plus two Virginia State Champion teams (JW Robinson and Hanover) and three more that finished in the top 7 (Colonial Forge, Forest Park and New Kent). Paulsboro was the runner-up at the NJ state dual tournament and Blair Academy was runner-up at the national prep tournament.

On the mat, perennial national power Blair Academy showed their team strength in making their first appearance at ETR and dominated the field in winning the team title. Thomas Haines completed an historical run to become the first ever, 4-time ETR Champion, enroute to also winning his fourth PIAA State title. There were several strong weight classes that stood out. Blair’s Charles Tucker survived a gauntlet at 120, which had five nationally ranked wrestlers, by beating three of them to earn OW honors. 106 also proved to be very deep and saw eventual PIAA State Champion, Jake Riegel from Bethlehem Catholic come out on top of a weight that included eleven state medalists, plus a national prep place winner. The 126lb final was a rematch from the Beast, where Zeke Moisey and Matt Kolodzik waged another epic battle, with Moisey again getting a hard fought victory. Solanco’s Bo Spiller edged out teammate Haines by just 15 seconds for the most falls award.

Another positive element of ETR is the incorporation of a charity component into the event, which we have done since 2009. This year, we were very happy to donate $2,000 to Beat the Streets – Philadelphia.

The 2015 field looks to be another step up in the quality and depth of competition. Wrestlers expected to compete include 12 State/Nat Prep champions, 27 finalists, 65 medalists and 111 qualifiers. There are also 10 Junior State Champs scheduled to participate as freshman next year. The event will feature 11 teams that finished in the top 17 at the 2013 PIAA State Tournaments, including the PIAA AA State Champion; the Delaware State Champion; a New Jersey State Champion and two runners up, plus two Virginia State Champions and two additional VA teams that were in the top 3 in their state tournaments. Among teams making their first appearance at ETR will be long time PA District 3 power Cumberland Valley, two of New Jersey’s best in High Point and Hanover Park, along with our first ever entries from New York (St. Anthony’s) and West Virginia (Musselman). Adding to an already strong PA District 11 contingent is Stroudsburg and Bethlehem Liberty. Heading up a good group of prep teams is Malvern Prep, as they make their return to ETR, while new preps to ETR - Georgetown Prep, St. Paul’s and Phelps School - will each bring some talented wrestlers. Other first timers include PA’s Exeter and Berlin Brothersvalley. Battlefield, VA also returns to ETR after previously competing in 2007 and 2008.
