Criteria: What a ClusterF!!

Recommended Posts

It is unbelievable that we have a system in which niether competitor, neither coach, and the on-the-mat ref don't know who's actually winning based on criteria when a match is tied.

Anthony Valencia just beat Israel Martinez 10-10 based on criteria in the finals of the FILA Juniors, and nobody could figure out WTF was going on until minutes after the match was already over. It turns out that they both had a 4-point move but Valencia had more 2-point moves, which gave him the win despite the fact that Martinez had the last score (a 4-point move).

How exactly does the criteria work? Which criteria are more important than the others, and in what rank order?

What a total cluster.

Martinez was wrestling to conserve his lead because, like I did, he thought he was up on criteria by virtue of having the last score, having matched the 4-point move.

Martinez tried to make sure, but the clock didn't indicate who had criteria, and the ref wouldn't tell him. Watch the video, and Martinez tries several times to ask the ref what's going on

Get an actual lead on the scoreboard. Ties should be ties, at least until an OT has been wrestled.
