TBar1977 4,539 Report post Posted July 2, 2014 According to the article, former Penn State and current Nittany Lion Wrestling Club wrestler David Taylor will have to expand his trophy case to include the Jesse Owens Big Ten Athlete of the Year Award. Nice. http://www.pennlive.com/sports/index.ss ... earns.html

ocho 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2014 Very cool. I think this really helped in having him appointed as an ESPY finalist as well. Hope he wins!

superold 34 Report post Posted July 2, 2014 I think Winston is going to win the award, his resume is pretty impressive. Does anyone know the time period the ESPYs considers when voting for the award? Meaning, could Taylor's freestyle losses count against him?

Meaning, could Taylor's freestyle losses count against him? Let's be honest here, the only people that will be voting for Taylor are wrestling fans and they will vote for the wrestler regardless of his losses to the reigning world champ. Taylor won't win unfortunately, just like Dake didn't win last year. It takes a truly amazing run by a wrestler and no real stand out candidates from other sports to get a wrestler the ESPY award. Do you believe that Taylor's freestyle losses make his run less than "truly amazing"? It has no bearing on his run at all. He is in the running for the award for his college season, not his freestyle season. Plus if 3 losses to the 3x defending world/olympic champ are a negative, then what does Burroughs loss to Marable do to his run? The answer is nothing. You got the whole rape thing, then didn't he steal some stuff too?
superold 34 Report post Posted July 2, 2014 It has no bearing on his run at all. He is in the running for the award for his college season, not his freestyle season. Are you sure? Does the voting rules specifically state that? Plus if 3 losses to the 3x defending world/olympic champ are a negative, then what does Burroughs loss to Marable do to his run? The answer is nothing. What does Burroughs have to do with anything? And Burroughs' loss does put a minor blemish on his run. I'm sure that Burroughs wanted to go undefeated up through 2016 giving him a 6 year undefeated streak like some of the Russian greats. That loss to Marable certainly does more than "nothing" to his run. Also, I'm not sure of the period of time that's being considered for the award. If they take into account everything after the last ESPY awards, Taylor has a few more losses on his record. Taylor lost to Dake and Tsargush after last year's season iirc. Taylor lost to a guy (Dake) who failed to win the award the previous season. Remember Taylor has a career 0-5 mark against Dake. The ESPY voters may be thinking that Taylor isn't worthy of the award if he couldn't even beat the other ESPY nominated wrestler who didn't win award the previous season. JasonBryant 2,098 Report post Posted July 2, 2014 Pretty sure the ESPY voters don't even remember who the other nominees were the previous year. Let's not give them more credit than they actually deserve. That being said, #VOTEM2

Cletus_Tucker 890 Report post Posted July 2, 2014 For once I agree with JB. Doubtful anyone on the panel remembers or knows the name Kyle Dake. As stated above, Taylor will get the wrestling vote adn very little else. He wont win and it wont be a surprise to anyone.
