Interesting Recruiting Trend So Far

Recommended Posts

This is the first recruiting cycle in a while, at least so far, where the top 100 (especially the top 20) that have committed are really spread out instead of getting gobbled up early by mostly big name programs. Penn State, OSU, Minnesota, Iowa, tOSU and Cornell do not have one recruit committed in the top 15 (Intermat). When's the last time you could say that in late July?

Some notable items:

This is the first time since Sanderson took over at PSU that he does not have a commitment from a top 10 in July; (this may change next week - Stroker coming to town again)

The state of Iowa has 3 guys ranked in the top 100 that have committed so far and the top two chose UNI (#32-Thomsen, #60-Steiert) ;

Virginia already has 3 top 100 recruits including two ranked in the top 15 (#7-Fox, #15-Krivus, #58-Harrell)

Arizona State has two in the top 10 by way of winning the Valencia sweepstakes (#1-A. Valencia, #6-Z. Valencia)

Still a lot of talent uncommitted so things may look like business as usual when the smoke clears however if this trend continues the recruiting rankings may look upside down compared to previous years.

Intermat is reporting that Austin Assad gave a verbal to Michigan. Assad is probably rated Ohio's #1 senior recruit. This is the first time Ryan has not brought in the top Ohio guy since David Taylor. That being said, this appears to be one of the weakest senior classes for Ohio in a long time.

This is how it looks so far:

1. Arizona State: (#1) A. Valencia; (#6) Z. Valencia

2. Virginia: (#7) Fox; (#15) Krivus; (#58) Harrell

3. Oklahoma St. (#8) Smith; (#31) Brock; (#45) LeWallen

4. Michigan: (#2) L. Massa; (#51) Assad

5. UNI: (#32) Thomsen; (#60) Steiert

6. Minnesota: (#16) Steveson

7. Buffalo: (#21) Forte

8. Illinois: (#26) Montalvo

9. Rutgers: (#30) Gentile

10. North Dakota State: (#36) Forgarty

11. Missouri: (#40) Clayton

12. Iowa State: (#47) DiBlasi

13. Iowa: (#92) Wilcke

The biggest subjective decision so far seems to be Arizona State over Virginia. What do you think, would you take the Valencia brothers over Virginia's three recruits? I believe I would.

Yeah this is spot on. Mass. Perry lost A LOT (all 14 of their starters in 2013-14 were juniors or seniors) and Austin was on the Brecksville team that lost to them in the DI dual finals. Not only that, but St. Ed's placed 7th in the state tournament last year. SPG will be great like always, as Jordan's career begins to wind down. Also, of the 42 state champs last year, only eight are returning seniors. I have a feeling Ohio will come back up, this is just it regressing to the mean after the outlier years of the Stiebers and Taylors.

I don't have an intermit subscription, so does anyone know what percentage of the top 100 guys are more than one sport athletes as of their junior/senior seasons? I'm always curious to know the drop off as college approaches.
