Pay

Recommended Posts

I am curious to find out if you are payed equally as compared to other sports? For instance at my current position, the basketball and football coaches are paid 50% more than myself. Volleyball, softball and baseball are all paid more than wrestling.

I obviously do not coach for the money, yet at the same time I have a hard time swallowing the idea that the time of another sport's coach is worth more than another's.

It's a bummer that the wrestling coach gets less, but you have to think that in high school in most places football and basketball make the majority of the money for the athletic department. Pay reflects that, as does the added pressure a football and basketball coach can have.

In my district coaches are paid equal to their counterpart gender sport. So since football coaches is well paid all the volleyball coaches are will paid. Since boy basketball coaches are well paid the girls basketball coahes are well paid. All the rest of the sports go way down in pay after that. Wrestling coaches are paid equal to girls gymnastics coaches, which isn't much.

My district reevaluated their coaches pay scale a couple years ago. A committee sat down and worked through every extra curricular position and graded it on about 9 criteria.  Then depending on the "score", the pay scale was adjusted.  Wrestling is paid pretty fair in regards to others in my district.  In fact, I think it is only 1 percent less than the football and basketball coaches.

I make just over 4 grand for coaching wrestling.

It is a matter of game film.  Imagine how long it takes coaches to go through an entire game football game, play by play, and dissect the good and bad.  Even if 4 coaches each take a quarter for a football game, you are talking about a lot of time.  OH, and multiply that by TWO because you need to do that for your film and your opponent's film.  Then there is game-planning entire changes in offense and defense, and developing a plan to coach that.

Wrestling coaches also have the luxury of outside wrestling clubs augmenting your instruction DURING THE SEASON, where that doesn't exist in football or basketball.  Well, maybe some street-ball pickup games for basketball.  But I don't think you have a coach present there.

I can probably argue that the degree of difficulty in coordinating aspects outside game prep and practices like logistics, travel, RECRUITING and medical are tougher than wrestling.  Some football/basketball teams even have Freshmen, JV and Varsity teams.

And like others have said earlier, job security affects basketball and football more than wrestling in most schools.

My uncle coached college tennis and basketball.  Excellent tennis coach.  Coached some sports in high school too, including wrestling.

He told me the two most difficult coaching jobs were head football and head track.
