NAIA, D2 and D3 to NCAA D1

Recommended Posts

With so many talented NAIA guys at Midlands it had me thinking about guys who transferred to D1 after starting at NAIA, D2, or D3 and had success. Obviously there have been too many to list from Jr. colleges and then you had when they let lower division wrestle at D1s when the rules were different.

I could really only come up was Jody Strittmatter. Any others?

The easiest one for me to think of(and this is further back) is Carlton Haselrig.

3x D2 NCAA Champ

3x D1 NCAA Champ

There are also guys from CA that I can think of real quick:

Joe Azevedo

Olympian

1x D1 NCCA Champ(3x finalist)

3x D2 NCAA Champ

Joe Gonzales

Olympian

1x D1 NCCA Champ(2x finalist))

2x D2 NCAA Champ

Dan Cuestas

2x D1 NCAA Champ

2x D2 NCAA Champ

So these guys transferred from a NAIA, D2 or D3 schools to a D1 school?

I know there were a number of guys that had success wrestling in the D1 tournament when they let non-D1 guys wrestle in it and I know there have been a ton of Jr College guys that went on to have success.

I am looking for NAIA, D2 or D3 that transferred to D1.  Fittery and Stritmatter fit this.  Not sure about any of the guys just listed.

CA,

Those guys were at D2 schools that had the opportunity to wrestle in the D1 championships. The question was about guys who transferred IN to D1 schools. This is probably more of a "modern era" type of question.

As the ones noted above - Dieffenbach, Chionuma, Fittery, Lawal, Lewis, etc. are on point with the question.

George Ivanov transferred to Boise State after his program at Nebraska-Omaha was cut.

Ryan Lewis transferred from North Dakota st and was a 2x ncaa finalist at 133, Marty Morgan transferred from ndsu and was a 3x aa and ncaa champion. Both for the gophers, Morgan was late 80s and Lewis early 00s

I think that describes Brock Lesnar as well.
