The Minnesota Ceiling

Recommended Posts

Is it just me or do Minnesota guys peak as freshmen or sophomores and then wait for people to graduate.

The only glaring exception i know is Manuel Rivera. And this may be typical of D1 to some extent, but the Minny guys are super impressive as freshmen, and really don't improve from there.

Or maybe I could restate it this way, They don't peak as seniors.

Injuries have played a part in the Schlatter, Reiter and Kish early high achievers. Jayson Ness and Zach Sanders finished at their highest. Konrad high. Nelson maybe even. How could you forget Safratowich? Are you giving up on this year's seniors already? 5 have a chance to peak.

JRob is truly one of our sport's legends.  Yet, the evidence certainly seems to indicate that he runs a damn tough training program, that has resulted in a LOT of career-hampering injuries.  Are Minny's injury woes ultimately JRob's responsibility?  Who knows?

Regardless, I think almost every other D1 program would gladly take Minny's problems/results over the last 15 years.

Loved Safratowich. I'm really not grinding an axe, but it is certainly a morbid curiosity.

As a minnesota fan I really blame it on the style of wrestling. Certain guys wrestle well in the style and others no so much, they almost need to recruit farm boy types like brett Pfarr and kevin Steinhaus and not the flashy types like the schlatters, reiters. Guys that are grinder tough guys, I guess like the iowa style wrestlers. There is a reason you see guys like nick moore, derek at john, Ethan lofthouse peak themselves earlier in their careers as well. They aren't the Proto type iowa style guys like a Daniel Dennis, Brent metcalf, brands, Steiner types of guys

I'm not saying that Gable doesn't deserve credit. He does. Its a feat that will never be equaled again. I'm just saying that you never hear JRobs name mentioned, and he was an assistant at Iowa for 8 of the  "glory" years, from 76-84, just when Gable was getting things started and I think that he was a bigger part of it than people know.

Ness - Ranked 1, 2, 4, 2

CD- Ranked 1, DNP, 6, 4

ND, Ranked 4, DNP, 7, DNP

Nelson, 2, 1, 1, 7

J. Ness - 1, 3, 2, 5

C. Yohn - 7, DNP, DNP, DNP

S. Yohn - 5, 8, 8, DNP

Konrad - 1, 1, 2, 4

Hahn - 1, 1, 5, 5

There are also guys like ZIlverberg, C. Yohn, Saf, etc who AA'd their senior years.  I'm sure there are others as well but this was just a quick check of the old memory banks.

These are just a few recent examples.  Now there are guys like Reiter, Kish, Schlatter, etc. who got injured later in their careers but I think saying they peak early is just silly.

Yeah, I would say Lesnar, Hahn and Konrad looked pretty damn good as Seniors.  Most recently, Ness and C. Dardanes look sharp as ever.  Both Dardanes actually look reinvigorated(which is hard to believe due to having to cut more weight) and are poised to have their best AA finishes of their respective careers.

In fact, I would say most "peaking" issues Minnesota has had stems mainly from injury. Every team has it's HEW victims, but I don't see Minnesota having significantly more than any other top program.

To Minnesota's credit they wrestle in everything including a brutal B10 schedule.  They skipped the scuffle for Hawaii this year and who can blame them?  Maybe that's JRob attempting to deal with this issue.  Rob Koll recently said in an interview that the season is too long and I don't think many would disagree with him.

Confusing people with facts.  But that's the way some of us roll these days.

What was the question?

I'm not certain of my premise but, listing a bunch of all american finishes and acting as if i said they don't produce good wrestlers isn't relevant. If someone took Iowa AA's from this time period, and calculated the average improvement in NCAA placement per year, and it was the same as Minny they would have point.

When I look at this I see a lot of guys (Sanders, Yohn, vega steinhaus, volkman) who I could reasonably claim stopped improving early and crept up the podium as a result of wrestlers graduating.

Maybe this opinion is just some prejudice i developed but most of the responses to it at this point are coming from people who don't even understand what I am saying.
