Iowa v. Mizzou

Recommended Posts

There's a chance they meet @ the National Duals, so let's get some thoughts....

125 - Waters v. Gilman.....Waters by dec

133 - Synon v. Clark.....Clark by mdec (Synon's like 6'8", so I think he'll give Clark fits)

141 - Mayes v. Jeva.....push

149 - Houdashelt v. Sorenson.....Houdashelt by dec (Drake does too much for Sorenson to do nothing)

157 - Lavallee v. Kelly.....push

165 - England v. Moore.....Moore by dec

174 - Eblen v. Evans.....Evans by dec

184 - Miklus v. Brooks......push

197 - Cox v. Burak.....Cox by dec

HWT - Mellon v. Telford.....Telford by dec (as long as Mellon stays off his back)

I have IA winning 4 matches, MU winning 3 and 3 toss-ups

I like Waters over Gilman in the dual, but I concede Waters' style leaves less room for error, since he will have to rely on mat wrestling and riding time against the best TD guys (Delgado, Garrett, Dance, Gilman). He can beat any of those guys, but stringing together an entire tournament with that style is tough. I think he is less than 50/50 to make the NCAA finals, so I agree with you on that.

My predictions for a potential Mizzou - Iowa matchup:

125 - Waters dec. Gilman                  3-0 Mizzou         (Waters is money during regular season, could be different story                                                                                         @ NCAAs)

133 - Clark mdec. Synon                   4-3 Iowa

141 - Mayes dec. Dziewa                  6-4 Mizzou         (Mayes is more offensive and capitalizes on a couple takedowns)

149 - Houdashelt dec. Sorenson       9-4 Mizzou         (Houdashelt has more experience and will be more offensive)

157 - Kelly dec. Lavallee                   9-7 Mizzou         (Kelly's offense will overpower Lavallee's low-crouch defensive                                                                                              stance)

165 - Moore dec. England                 10-7 Iowa

174 - Evans dec. Eblen                     13-7 Iowa           (Evans is just on a level above Eblen)

184 - Miklus dec. Brooks                   13-10 Iowa         (Brooks and Miklus have been wrestling well lately, could go either                                                                                      way)

197 - Cox dec. Burak                         13-13                 (Cox is just an absolute beast. He's so athletic and has great                                                                                                 technique)

HWT - Telford mdec. Mellon              17-13 Iowa        (Telford will win NCAAs IMO, he can put up bonus on Mellon)

The matches I'm most looking forward to are 149 and 184. I think there will be lots of great action with some pretty evenly-matched guys

The matches I'm most looking forward to are 149 and 184. I think there will be lots of great action with some pretty evenly-matched guys

125 - Agree.

133 - Agree.

141 - Agree.

149 - Agree.

157 - Is Kelly more offensive than Ian Miller? Lavallee has dropped 2 matches to Miller by a point, one in SV. I think the dual comes down to this match.

165 - Agree, but Moore could get bonus.

174 - Stylistically, this is Eblen's best shot at beating a top 4 guy. I like his chances.

184 - Miklus has been a beast except for one bad day at the Scuffle. Agree.

197 - Burak will be thoroughly controlled and outwrestled in every phase. Agree.

285 - Agree.

This is a better Mizzou team, by far, than the one that beat Iowa 2 years ago at Nat'l Duals. I think Mizzou wins 6 of 10, but Iowa scores bonus in 3 of 4. Let's say 18-16 Mizzou.

This is a interesting matchup. A lot would have to go MIzzou's way for them to win the dual.

125- Waters by dec 3-0 MIZ

133- Clark by dec 3-3

141- Mayes by dec 6-3 MIZ

149- Houdashelt by dec 9-3 MIZ

157- Kelly by dec 9-6 MIZ

165- Moore by dec 9-9

174- Evans by dec 12-9 Iowa

184- Brooks by dec 15-9 Iowa

197- Cox by dec 15-12 Iowa

285- Telford by dec 18-12 Iowa

A lot of close matches. I could see 125, 141, 149, 157 and 184 going either way. 184 is particularly interesting to me since Miklus is a Iowa hs product that the hawkeyes and cyclones let slip out of the state.

125: Waters dec Gilman 3-0 Mizzou. Gilman doesn't have a good enough offense to really get in and finish on Waters. Waters is too good on top, Gilman won't be able to match him there.

133: Clark Mdec Synon 4-3 Iowa. Clark's too good here, will dictate the match.

141: Mayes dec. Jeva 6-4 Mizzou. Mayes will take it to Jeva, who for his high school accolades has been a rather large disappointment in D1.

149: Houdashelt dec. Sorenson 9-4 Mizzou. Sorenson is on a tear, but I don't think he can handle the chain wrestling of Houdashelt. Wouldn't be surprised by a Sorenson win, but I wouldn't bet on it here.

157: LaValle dec. Kelly 12-4 Mizzou. Kelly just doesn't impress me that much when I've seen him. I would bet on this being one of the closer matches of the dual, though. Could certainly go either way.

165: Moore dec England 12-7 Mizzou. Moore is just a step above England, even when he isn't at his best. Maybe England will adjust to the weight and show he can handle 165.

174: Evans dec Eblen 12-10 Mizzou. Out of the big 4 I think Evans is the one that Eblen has the best chance of beating due to style match ups. Still, going to go with the stache in this match.

184: Miklus dec Brooks 15-10 MIzzou. Miklus had one bad showing, but has beaten a top guy in Dechow and normally looks pretty good.

197: Cox dec Burak 18-10 Mizzou. I don't think this will be close. Maybe low scoring, but not close.

285: Telford WBF Mellon. Telford won't be pushed. 18-16 Mizzou.

I have 125, 141 and 197 as favorites for Mizzou and 133, 174 and 285 as favorites for Iowa. I can see the other matches all going either way on a regular basis, but these 6 stand out above their opponents to me.

God Bless Brian Smith for putting Mizzou in this picture! No one has done more for a program!

I would say Cael has done a better job with Penn State personally :X not to knock Smith and what he has done for Mizzou, the guy is great for that program.

I disagree but I might be biased.  Smith took Mizzou when they were in the cellar and he didn't have the name recognition.  To me thats more impressive.
