Question about Stieber's career record.

Recommended Posts

Does Stieber's injury shortened true freshman season not count on his career record? Watching the tOSU vs. Purdue meet they stated his record as being 107-3 on screen. I know in his 3 full seasons he lost to Oliver, Dardanes(correct?), and Retherford. Just curious if his true freshman year isn't counted, & if so does anyone know why? Forgive me if this has been discussed before.

Redshirt years don't count on records.

Yes I am aware of this, having wrestled in college myself.  The reason I asked was because Stieber's true freshman year was not a "redshirt" year.  He wrestled varsity matches until his season was ended due to injury.  Having wrestled varsity matches, he was ineligible to redshirt in the typical sense of the word.  I'm assuming he was granted a medical hardship.  Usually when guys are given a medical hardship, the matches they competed in during the injury-shortened season are counted.  I am a huge Stieber fan.  This thread is in no way meant to try and "bring him down"/take shots at him/etc.  I was genuinely just curious about his 8 bouts during his true freshman year and how they are counted on his overall record.  I know this has been discussed before but I could not remember the answer, and BTN's graphic made me wonder about it.

112-6 career I believe then?

Or 113-6 if the below is correct:

2014 - 2015.....18 - 0.....(based on Earl's site @ d1collegewrestling.net - includes January 31 dual against Purdue)

2013 - 2014.....30 - 1.....(based on the Bucks official site @ http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com)

2012 - 2013.....27 - 0.....(based on the Bucks official site @ http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com)

2011 - 2012.....33 - 2.....(based on the Bucks official site @ http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com)

2010 - 2011.......5 - 3.....(based on the Bucks official site @ http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com)

Total..............113 - 6

I think Gimpeltf is  right. There is no "official" record. There are records of NCAA placements, but I don't think the NCAA tracks overall records. It's all unofficial.

But the NCAA *does* have rules/regulations on which matches are to be counted on a wrestler's record. So while they don't maintain a list of "official" career records, it's spelled out which matches do (or do not) count. Over the years, those definitions have changed, though. There was a time when matches against JUCO guys weren't counted on a D-I wrestler's record.

If true freshman season does count then Cael's record would have come with a single loss. So.

If true freshman season does count then Cael's record would have come with a single loss. So.

Cael was redshirting at the time. Stieber wasn't. That's the difference.
