All-Star Returning NCAA Champ didn't repeat Lineup

Recommended Posts

Delgado and/or T-shirts may not make the finals, much less repeat this year. Let's get together a lineup of the best guys who didn't repeat the next year after winning a title. Will update with suggestions.

125- Matt McD (twice?)

133- Oliver

141 ish- Dan Gable (?)

149- Metcalf/Caldwell/Maple

157- Derrick St. John

165 ish- Matt Reiss/ Taylor

174- Drew Howe

184- Qwright

197- Kilgore

Hwt- Anthony Nelson/Kerry McCoy

Edit: Bumped Wright down to the weight he didn't defend at, and added in Kilgore who Wright man-handled at 197. Added homer mancrush Metcalf, kept Caldwell as a backup only because who knows if his shoulder has healed, and Maple because: damn.

Isn't Metcalf the poster child of this sucky display of knowledge?

It's between him and David Taylor if we're talking about two consecutive years but not necessarily a career. Along with Gable, those two are way up there in terms of the publicity of their failure to repeat (year on year).

Nobody saw Metcalf losing.  Taylor had a bullseye on him the minute after Dake won his 3rd title at 3 different weights.

one of the worst displays of wrestling 'knowledge/judgment/opinion/recollection' i have seen in a while.

you guys suck.

You should see the comment section on any Flo video!

There are too many great wrestlers who failed to repeat to really make a worthwhile list....Just start with the list of 3X NCAA champs, see which ones won their freshman year...Then go to 2X NCAA champs, and see which ones won a title their freshman or sophomore year..Then fill out the list.

Some memorable ones for me include:

Dan Gable, Larry Owings, Rick Sanders, Wade Schalles, Terry Brands, Ed and Lou Banach, Teyon Ware, Jim Nance, Yoshiro Fujita, and Tadaaki Hatta.

Note: Due to various reasons including upset losses, injuries and eligibility (ex., Schalles).  And, as mentioned previously, some ended up on top of the podium again their senior season.

The discussion seems to be under class national champs who failed to defend at least one eligible year. I expect that number would be three figures. So fill in the blank.

3 time national champs failed to win their 4th (zero in D1?, other Divisions?? - at least 3 times in PIAA)

2 time Champs 2 time OW ??

2 time champ 1 time OW - Gable, Dwayne Keller, Rick Sanders ??

2 time No OW -- Pat Milkovich, Ed Banach???

1 time Champ 1 OW -- ???

1 time champ no OW -- 50+
